750ml served in a Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a hazy burnt orange with 3 fingers of white head that has excellent retention. The head forms a nice cap and collar and never dissolves.

S - Ground dried grain, very earthy grassiness, black and green pepper corns, cloves, apples, peaches, apricots, and banana esters. Soured cantaloupe really comes out on the second pour.

T - More herbal than the nose, very spicy, concentrated floral flavors, it's hard to pick out what spices you're tasting. Good dose of melon and stone fruit, especially apricots mesh with a heavy malty base while herbal bitterness balances out and keeps things semi dry.

M - Aggressive stingy carbonation at first but mellows out and turns creamy. Heavier body but the carbonation helps lighten it up.

Not a common style of beer but this is one of the best I've had. Awesome yeast and a hefty malt base. The herbs and spices work very well and aren't overdone. It's a challenge to pick out what you're tasting. This would go great with smoked meats.
A well crafted beer. Worth seeking out if you're into interested in the style.

Pours a very hazy, dark golden yellow color with banana hues and a one finger, frothy white head that quickly settles into a thin ring.  Streaks of soapy lacing left behind.

Heavily spiced aroma with lots of pepper, coriander, clove and lemon zest.  Reminds me more of a witbier with bready yeast, citrus fruit and a strong banana character.  

Medium bodied but a bit thinner than expected with a zesty, peppery spice presence that dominates the palate.   Lots of coriander, clove and citrus zest followed by bready yeast, banana and an odd herbal/medicinal presence.  Slightly metallic unpleasant flavoring the finish.  The spices are way too strong overpowering everything else.   Too thin and could use more citrus sweetness.  Subtle farmhouse funk in the finish but again it feels more like a week witbier.

An excellent herbed ale. Clean, vibrant, yet still somehow rustic. Hazy gold with a huge head of airy foam. How else to explain the flavor profile other than floral and herbal - perfume, lemon zest, Easter grass, cut hay, mineral-laced sea air, wild herbs, black pepper, and ramps. Bitterness is just as clean and pleasant as if hops were used. Dupont always puts out quality stuff, still this one really surprised me. Whoever dialed in the botanicals did a masterful job.

First had: on tap at Monk's, Philly, PA

Dupont is a seemingly reputable brewery, but I've yet to be impressed by anything they have to offer, including their foul flagship offering. Their "specialty" is saisons, and this is the first thing I've had from them that wasn't a saison. Or was it? Because for something labelled as a gruit, this had more of the characteristics of a saison, and nearly none of a gruit. Hopless as it was.

Hazy golden-yellow pour with a creamy white cap of head that sank to a thick ring. Yeasty aroma, sweet esters like overripe fruit, herbal and perfumy. Definitely lots of Belgium-ness in here. Taste reflected the aroma, came off as something between a saison and a tripel. Bready, yeasty, perfume, potpourri, light malts, more overripe fruit sweetness overpowering the earthy spice medley in the background. Mouthfeel was a mix of smooth and chewy, and definitely pretty soft and drinkable. Just wasn't doing much for me, I guess mainly because I went in expecting a good gruit, and instead got some indistinct tripel-saison-gruit hybrid, with the potency in that order. And these days, I really have to be in the mood for a tripel. This was a little too sickeningly sweet for me.

I've still yet to be impressed by Dupont.

Very hazy pale golden hue with a massive fluffy bright white head that lingers forever. Smells like a saison, fruity and funky. Banana and clove, a bit peppery and spicy as well.

Tastes like a saison as well but with a very different finish. Thin but fluffy body. Sweet starchy malt up front with bright tropical fruits. Clove and white peppercorn along the base of the mouth with hints of lemon peel and grapefruit. Finishes spicy, herbal and slightly medicinal. Light and refreshing, somehow manages to muster up a dry and even bitter finish without the addition of hop. Lingering sweetness.

Nice and herbal, feels like its healing me!

Pours a light, clear gold with a thin white ring. Nose is very herb-forward, lots of rosemary, thyme, and honey. Taste is similarly herb-heavy, along with more honey and a touch of crisp, light malt. Mouthfeel is light and crisp, with a medium body and good carbonation. Overall a decent beer, perhaps just a touch too bitter and herbal for my taste.

750 ml bottle, no bottled-on date, poured into a chalice.

A- Pours a hazy blonde color, produces a finger of creamy white head, awesome retention that's still hanging around a half hour later, leaves a bit of spotty lacing.

S- Aroma explodes out of the bottle as soon as the cork is removed, interesting aroma of herbs, an earthy root aroma and herbal flowers. As well as some spice, musty yeast, spicy esters and slightly sweet malt. Aroma is well-rounded and pretty awesome.

T- Similar to the nose, lots of yeasty, herbal, earthy spice. Banana and clove esters are more prominent here than in the nose. Yeast is a bit musty and very smooth, some light malt and honey sweetness as well.

M- Medium-bodied, smooth creamy feel with a crisp finish.

O- A really cool beer, the combination of saison-ey yeast and esters and the herbs makes for a very drinkable and interesting brew, definitely worth trying.

No hops, what the...? But with certain complexity and balance from its charming yeast character and then complemented with an array of herbs and spices, the beer doesn't need 'em.

The invitation to dive right into the glass starts with it's glowing bright gold appearance that edges toward the honey-straw side. The mild haze casts a slightly diffused character through the center. Its lively carbonation builds a fluffy white head that retains gracefully despite any help from absence hops. The beer also reminds me why the stick foam left on the glass as Belgian lace.

Boastful aromas never miss the hops as the yeast dictates the aromatic balance. Delicate tea-like herbs, the light pungency of grass, and a bouquet of hibiscus, chamomile, clove, and a dash of cinnamon attests to the complements of yeasty phenols and additions to the brew kettle. Backed by a sweeter scent of baking wheat breads and confectioner's sugar, the malts pull the anxious spices into harmony.

Much of the same manifests in taste, but perhaps in reverse order. The powdery sweetness of pilsner and wheat grist prime the palate with a softer almost-cotton candy-like sweetness that lifts as the spices and fruit take hold. A light must of aged woods usher in a mid palate of cider, white grape, apple, and cranberry with plump juicy taste and pleasant acidity. A late palate of spices lead by clove and rose hips develops into an earthy straw-like bitterness to close the session. Even without the smooth bitterness of hops, the beer avoids harsh bite, yet complements with a still bitter balance.

Spritzy carbonation gives a texture similar to sparkling wine except with the understated heft of wheaty malt. The acidic carbonation easily pulls the malt from the mouth and allows for a quick finish of peppercorn, light herbal bitterness, and alcoholic warmth. Surprisingly low in astringency, the rustic ale closes with an aftertaste of rose and chamomile.

I'm quite surprised of how I didn't miss the hops hardly at all. Where usual saisons celebrate hop character that ranges from medium to bold with earthen spice and resolute bitterness, this one achieves everything that the style should with a superior balance from yeast. Its a fantastic beer that's a testament to the quality to be expected from Dupont.

Pours with a light and fluffy white head that is about 2 fingers high in a tulip shaped glass. The head lasts for about 2 minutes then fades to a lace topping the ale with coarser lacing around the edge.  The color is a hazy straw and carbonation effervescence is visble. 

The smell is strongly funked with fruit notes of lemon and cantaloupe. The funk is like a damp barn and there is a bit of skunky edge, but a bit more herbal and earthy. 

The taste is masked by some really explosive effervescence.  It starts with some pale sweet grains and fruity esters.   There elements of herbs, coriander, and Belgian yeasts.  It ends bready and dry. 

The mouthfeel is intense like a champagne. A little thin, alcohol barely noticeable, and nice pleasant aftertaste.

Poured into a Black Raven pint glass. Pours a light to medium golden amber. Thin white head dissipated to a ring around the glass. Aroma is light fruit, melon, spices reminiscent of Belgian spicing, sweet malt. Flavor starts like a dry saison, fruit elements develop quickly, peach, apple, orange as well as honey. Light Belgian ale elements like cloves and banana also present. Finishes with a dry and aromatic herbal flavors, sage and grass. Flavor somewhat subdued in the finish, but a long lingering fruit and herbal aftertaste. Most closely resembles a fruit forward saison, but with no funky elements. Light but complex and a pleasure to drink. Light to medium bodied; this growler fill was somewhat low on carbonation.

A- This beer pours a thick white meringue so thick you could write on it and pushes above the glass lasting a long time while sticking to the glass. The hazy apricot body has a wall of microbubbles gliding to the surface.

S- The club soda note leads into a blend of stone fruit esters with some slight dry hint of spices finishing the aroma.

T- The fruity dry candy esters have a soft warm fresh spice note to the finish with some apricot esters mixed in there. There is some pale malt sweetness that comes through as the beer opens. A faint hint of brett grapefruit pith comes through but is very light. The finish is pretty clean with just a hint of esters lingering for a moment.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a touch of velvety fizz to the finish with no real alcohol heat.

O- This beer has a very nice blend of soft flavors that all work well together. There is a nice gentle fresh flavor to the spices that keep them mysterious but also enhance the flavor. The ester quality is nice and has enough depth to make this sessionable albeit a bit big in alcohol.

Labeled Cervesia. Pour is nice orangish amber with a fair bit of creamy white head. Nose is extremely yeasty, light dusty and assertive farmhouse notes. Spice rear palate and light with some lemon rind accompanying. The taste isn't as balanced or bright. A bit sweeter with notes of honey overtaking some of the farmhouse and yeast notes that were in the nose. Sticky caramel malt expresses a deeper malt body but really detracts from the yeast strand and funk. Feel is creamy with a strong carbonation and crisp finish.

Appearance is gold with a big white head leaving foamy lace. Cork stamped 2.011.

Smell is sweet, earthy and sugary.

Taste is more herbal and spicy like I expected, but there is restrain and balance here. Cumin, camomile? Not entirely sure, but it works well with the base belgian blonde, which is under-attenuated compared to the classic dupont saisons, and more in the moinette style (I'd guess it's the base wort). Just a touch hot, or at least an alcohol sweetness.

Mouthfeel is slick, almost flabby and light bodied.

Drinkability is pretty good, a nice take on a belgian blonde with the spices and herbs, the restraint is impression, but I wish it was drier.

Bottle from Harvest Wines. From notes.

A - Poured cloudy golden with a one finger fluffy white head and mild carbonation. Spotty lace anda film of retention.

S - Hoppy with grass and lemon. Canteloupe skin? Hay, banana, chamomile. Spritzy? Nice and hoppy.

T - Lemon, hops, grass, hay, tea, chamomile. Pretty cool.

M - Very effervescent with a medium body and a dry finish with lemon.

O/D - A little too spritzy but pretty good otherwise. Enjoyed it, but probably couldn't have another.

On tap at Lucky Baldwin's in Pasadena, CA.

Pours a murky honey yellow with a foamy bone colored head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, yeast, slight spice, and some fruity aromas. Taste is much the same with a mild spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel which works well for this beer. Overall, this is a very good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Great straw color with a very creamy white head with temporary lacing that does not stick too long- looking like a nice Belgian Saison. Light aroma with wheat and spices. Very light and refreshing taste. To me it taste like a tangy saison. I really liked this beer and would love to drink more.

My first-ever Scottish gruit/ancient herbed ale... not sure what to expect, looking forward to trying this.

750mL bottle into a saison glass. Pours crystal clear gold w/ a thick white head, lively carbonation.

Aroma is that strong wet hay smell typical of many Dupont beers, which quickly gives way to milder Belgian yeast and pale malt aromas. Some vague spices I can't ID.

Taste is spicy, fruity, but overall balanced and smooth. Apples, pears, and some nice floral notes. The more I sip on this, the more I like it.

Mouthfeel is light, crisp, with a dry finish. Cross between a saison and a white wine.

Overall, pleasantly surprised. For some reason I expected this to be a heavy-handed herbal spice bomb. Instead it's a tasty, well-crafted Belgian beer.

750mL into snifter. split 3-ways.

A: pretty clear blond body. bright white head. retention is good, lacing not so much.

S: earthy hoppy aroma. even smells dry. fruity cantaloupe.

T: rosemary? definitely some juniper berries. definitely fruity. sweet and sugary. finish is a tang sweet and then gets a bit dry.

M: carbonation is full and vibrant.

D: definitely reminiscent of their saison, tasty and refreshing. worth picking up if you can find it.

A corked and caged 750 mL bottle that I picked up at the Co-op after a glowing recommendation from the resident beer guy. The cork was stamped "2.011" and this was split into tulips.

Pours a lively golden straw color with pastel wheat hues. The body glows uniformly in the light, and is hazy enough that no fine details or real shadows penetrate from side of the glass to the other. About two inches of pure white, foamy, rocky head develops and lingers for a suitable amount of time. Scarce strands of sticky bubbles cling to the glass as lacing.

The aroma is of generous funk, some wheat and straw, belgian yeast, various muddled green herbs, and even more delicate spices. More subtle notes are difficult to individualize, as they seem both well-integrated and a bit overpowered by the funk. The nose is, however, strongly reminiscent of a saison, though with an extra dose of funk and a subtle herbal, almost fruity backing.

It tastes of straw and wheat up front, before a bit of tart peach, orange, and pear push through. A subtle yeasty funk flows throughout the sip, and a gentle stream of integrated herbs mounts towards the rear; perhaps some clove, banana peel, what resemples a slightly bitter, primarily floral hop, a touch of mango, and fresh grass. Some spices finish it off, with some white pepper and maybe some faint coriander being faintly noticeable. The flavors are all exceptionally balanced, however, and while the herbs and spices make a stoic appearance, I'm having a difficult time picking out any individual one.

The mouthfeel is superb; crisp, light bodied to the extent that the herbs and spices will allow, and a nice, refreshingly clean finish. Ample carbonation and a slightly acidic body give it a lively sensation on the tongue.

Overall, this is a very, very good beer. The fact that the flavors are so well integrated really put this one over the top for me. I'm very happy it was pointed out to me, and I won't hesitate to grab it again in the future.

To my taste this was definitely more of a saison than a gruit.

A: cloudy, off-white/amber color, dense creamy head
S: full nose, earthy, spicy, yeasty, traditional saison
T; saison style with strong malt backbone and noticeable EtOH, heavier, richer saison with touch of cloyingness in finish
M: good and highly drinkable, but not as balanced and thirst quenching as other Dupont Saisons

On tap at Max's today.

The beer pours a striking gold color with pretty good head retention and light lacing. The nose is pretty nice, as I get honey, orange peel, light vanilla, some light clove and some pretty nice underlying spice (mostly nutmeg I'd say). Mouthfeel replicates the nose, with the spice and light bitterness countering the modest sweetness very well. For all the world, the flavor profile reminds me of the Dupont Saison or Avec Les Bons, which I guess is completely to be expected. There's really a lot going on in this beer, and it's just eminently enjoyable. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a fairly long, spice infused finish. Alcohol is really well integrated into the flavor profile, and drinkability is flat out excellent.

Quite tasty.... I wouldn't hesitate to order this again.

Bottle from Chevy Chase, $11.99. I was initially going to pass on this after I'd heard mixed things about it, but after trying a sample the rep poured me yesterday, I knew I had to do this justice. By far the best gruit I've had, and I hope my review convinces you of that

A moderately hazy light orange with a dense, off-white head with excellent retention and lacing, this looks great. The nose is rather marvelous. This might be classified a gruit for rather pedantic reasons, but IMO, this is in the vein of a saison. Big, spicy and herbaceous nose with a blend of white pepper, bitter, bolted basil, heather and more generally, like a meadow in springtime. For a beer that is unhopped, this does have a surprising skunky character, faint but noticeable. Honey is noticeable as well, as is a lot of straw and dough-like malt character. The alcohol is pretty well hidden IMO.

The palate is a rather beautiful blend of a yeasty phenols, yeasty spices and bouquet garni. The mid-palate brings out all the fruitiness, with a blend of ripe peaches, mango and papaya with a little bit of melon too. The spice and herb character is rather excellent. Beautifully balanced white pepper, dried flowers, flavors of bay leaf and some herbaceous bitterness. The blend of herbs coupled with the yeast does simulate a mild to medium hop character, but the single biggest aspect that gives away the fact that no hops were used is the absolute absence of hop oils and resins on the finish. Yes, there's a little bitterness to go with the yeast and the honey drizzled fruit, but the lack of the definition that hops add to the finish does slightly detract from the enjoyment. That said, when evaluated for the style, this is simply nonpareil. Medium-light in body with a rather high level of carbonation, this beer is rather excellent. Highly recommended. Not quite as good as Saison Dupont, but definitely better than Avec Les Bons Voeux IMO.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass. Cork hits with a loud pop written with 2011 on it.

A real nice fluffy cloudy white head, large on pour, some good retention looks like whipped merringue. Body is a nice orange amber with yellow hues, a bit opaque. Love this retention and head, and slightly glowing body.

Nose hits with dry malty grains, sweet Belgian candy sugar, a little honey and a faint floral sense as well. Real nice.

Taste on the palate really seems to lack. Extremely light bodied, very dry and arid grains not bringing much of the sweet senses out hinted from the nose. Even for a gruit really lacking some flavor. Carbonation level seems a little high, and gets into spritzy territory which doesn't make it that more appealing.

I wish I could say more, and the sense of what was on the nose seemed to hint at that, but there's not too much going on. Overall it's not that bad, but I'd have something else with a little more noticeable palate profile.

A: Translucent dark straw color with a large beige head. Carbonation is prevalent streaming up the sides of the glass.

S: Light skunkyness combined with fruity Belgian yeast characteristics.

T: Tastes mostly light a light belgian ale. Nothing wrong with that, but I am having a hard time detecting the additional spices. A slight bit of acidity in the finish.

M: Highly carbonated, seems to go well with the style.

O: A highly drinkable Belgian golden style ale

Appearance: (5.0)
- Wonderful cloudy yellow brew with a hint of zesty orange. Big fluffy fingers of white head which slowly settled to a light thin layer over the brew with a thick half-inch ring of lace which is hanging on to the glass.

Smell: (4.5)
- Oh damn this smells good. Herbal grassy floral and zesty hops.. lovely herbal quality, a light skunky hop which is a good skunky, lemon zest, light citrus fruits, sugars, bready grain, biscuit. Right when I cracked the bottle I was in bliss.

Taste: (4.5)
- Bready sweet malt backing, light brown sugars, Belgian candy sugars melded with a great zingy citrus flare while noticeably playing well with great herbs, grassy and zesty peppery hops... light clove and banana from the yeast, and just an overall zesty fruity touch. Solid and fantastic.

Mouth Feel: (4.0)
- Little syrupy, drying, and cloying... also chewy to a point. This is a well carbonated if not over-carbonated brew which is medium bodied. Overall a nice zingy tingle which makes the mouth water.

Overall: (4.5)
- This is one hell of a solid beer. Fantastic really. Everything seems to be balanced so well, and the 8% ABV is dangerously well hidden. One could crack this on a summer day and want it as a session brew, one with full flavor. One of my new found favorites from this brewery.
