hidden in a back corner of the cellar

eyes...
deep bronze with some golden hues, lots of carbonation, solid one finger of white micro bubble head, well formed, beautiful lacing down the sides of the glass, a nice looking glass of suds

nose...
light malts, smoke? yeah, got that, a nice camp fire/meat smoke but not overwhelming, a dry sweetness

taste etc...
first swig was immeasurably subtle, it takes a sip or two to get the vibe here, a mild sweetness with bready tones, the smoke finishes in the back of the mouth and lingers, pretty light in the mouth and easy to drink

verdict?
incredibly smooth at this point after sitting in my basement, the smoke is a note in a song at this point, a sweet melody

Happened on a bottle of this at the newest local good beer store. I guess Fort Collins beers are slowly trickling into the Midwest and I couldn't pass up Smoked Märzen.

No dating to be found on the 22 oz. bottle.

L -- Hazy, brassy gold color with a sudsy, off-white head that settles pretty quickly.

S -- Woody smokiness with bready malt and mild DMS back. Mildly phenolic.

T -- Same woody smokiness up front with some mild phenolic notes emerging, but not lingering to make the beer unpleasant. There's a nice balance of light, bready malts behind the smoke and a spicy hop bitterness in the finish.

F -- Mouthfeel is soft up front and crisp in the finish with a light-medium body.

O -- This is a pretty solid rendition of a Franconian Rauchbier, if not a little thin in body for a Märzen. The smoke character is a little stronger than some imported Rauchbier, and it may be a bit shocking to the uninitiated, but I think Rauchbier drinkers would find this worth a try.

Bomber bottle

Clear, lighter amber, moderate head and leaving some fine lace on the glass

Malty, woody and yes smoky nose.

More malts on the palate, sweet, peat, light smoke. A tad thin and lacking the intrigue and depth of flavor (smoke) of the heavy hitters of the style

Ehh...decent at best smoked brew

Clear amber body; nice carbonation; white, creamy head. Faint wood ash aroma. Clean malt grain flavors with a well-infused smokiness. Medium body; clean, silky lager-like smoothness.

I was ready to be under-whelmed with this beer as the look and smell were rather pedestrian. Ah, but take a sip and you get a very nice, mildly rich and savory smoked lager treat. No, it's not a classic Bamberg rauchbier, yet it certainly delivers with a subtly balanced and deceptively rich and complex smokiness. If you are new to smoked beers or want to expose someone to the style, this would be a fine beer to do the job...

Appearance: Muddled copper, looks like someone's first homebrew attempt at an amber/red ale. I kind of hate that look.

Aroma: Sweet maltiness with a very subtle hint of smoke.

Taste: Much like the aroma, much too sweet, the smokiness is an afterthought that basically disappears 1/3 of the way through the beer. Really struggled to finish this.

Mouthfeel was fine, I guess.

Overall, tasted like an inexperienced homebrewer's concoction, reminded a lot of the first couple beers I homebrewed. Very muddled and sweet with an off-putting haze.

7/24/15 Had again from a bomber (original review was from a tap pour at World of Beer). Color and clarity was much better from the bottle. But such little smoke it almost seemed accidental. Flavor was very good for a standard American-made Marzen, just no smoke, which was disappointing. Keeping overall review the same.

Tap

Pours clear golden. White lacing head.

Smells of sweet barley malt and lightly of smoked wood.

Tastes of barley and smoked sausage with a sweet coppery finish.

Medium body with tingly carbonation on the roof of the mouth.

Very interesting tasty marzen that drinks easy. The smoked flavor will be divisive but I like it.

I thought/hoped for just a bit more smoke, but still a totally enjoyable brew enjoyed next to a fire on a cool autumn night. Maybe not worth seeking out per say, but I'd purchase again in the right situation.

Draft pint at Cigars & Stripes.

Dark saturated Amber, nice clarity, thin layer of foam with a small amount of spotty lace.

Softly smoky and sweet, malty. Taste is mellow and malty with a pleasant smoky note. Sort of like how a smoker smells when not in use, wood smoke and faintly bacony. Light bodied and drinkable.

Well it sure is pretty with a thick and bubbly off-white froth and amber body.

Aroma is an intriguing synthesis of roasted grain, smoked meats, damp, smoke-filled fabric, wood, and last, but definitely not least, caramel malts.

On the tongue the smoked characteristics revolve around a caramel malt base that supports a basket-full of of mango, orange and pear. Faint notes of spice and rind are noticed at the very back.

Light to medium-bodied and supremely well-balanced, which could work for or against the beer, depending on how much of that extra "American boldness" you want.

As for me, I can' get enough, and as for this one, I could use a bit more.
