Meh. No aroma or flavor. Who cares what it looks like and/or feels like when drunk.

Tastes closer to a black IPA than a chocolate stout. It'd get a significantly higher rating as a black IPA, IMO.

12 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. My first beer from The Fort Collins Brewery, acquired as part of a mixed six pack at the local Binny's. Expectations aren't amazing due to this beer's current ratings.

Poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

A - It pours a dark chocolate brown colored body; appears opaque black in the glass with about a finger and a half of tan head. Leaves behind some decent strands of lacing. Looks well enough for what it is. 4

S - The smell is pretty faint and neutral for a chocolate stout, but a brief whiff of authentic chocolate / cocoa does strike me at first. After that, it is basically all chocolate malt roast / char. Inoffensive, but it needs to be amped up. 3

T - The taste follows the nose - roasty, bitter chocolate malt, notes of char, cold coffee, and perhaps a very faint hint of milk sugar / lactose, but it could just be the impression. 3.5

M - Feel is smooth, creamy, roasty, and bitter. Goes down easy, especially with the moderately light abv. Nice carbonation. Nice for what it is. 3.5

Overall, a simplistic and generic approach to a lighter abv stout, but it's not the kind of beer that leaves a lasting impression. Nice to have tried it, and I look forward to trying more from this brewery, but this isn't an offering I would seek out again.

Pretty black with a real good head and fair lace, head was lasting.

Aroma is a bit muted compared to the taste. In fact aroma is WAY muted compared with taste. I'm only getting hints of what I'm getting in the taste. Flavors include some coffee, a touch of roasty and burnt, and quite a bit of chocolate, no hops.

Body is less than I'd expect for a chocolate stout. Thin, more like a brown ale, lingering mix of semi-sweet and milk chocolate flavored finish.
