Pouredinto an oversized wine glass a near jet black except for just a tinge of red at the bottome of the glass when held in light,a well formed tan colored head atop.A nice mix of milk chocolate and roast in the nose along with some molasses,flavors are dark roast mocha with a hint of molasses melding into a nice drying earthy finish.Just a solid brew here its flavorful but it goes down smooth and without a hitch.

Looks great from the get-go: an inky black with a small amount of foam so you can dive right in. Not much for aroma, but has a nice promise of chocolate with a heavy malt smell. Taste is fantastic, everything you'd want from a chocolate stout. Nothing unexpected or experimental, just a good, all-around choco-stout here. Nice mouthfeel with a full body for savoring, a little gritty at the back of the throat. Pleasant drinkability, but I'd recommend saving it for dessert alongside a plate of brownies.

There's chocolate in the name, though the brewery does not talk about brewing with actual chocolate. A decent amount of brown foam forms from a steady pour, good head retention. Nearly pitch black with some ruby edges when put to the light. Roasted grain that suggests unsweetened chocolate and used coffee grounds in the nose, with faint dark cherry and blackberry fruitiness in the back. Burnt flavors come off a little bitter with unsweetened, bitter dark chocolate and more coffee grounds on the taste buds. Mildly warming alcohol, maltiness seems to be stuck on burnt. Hop bitterness doesn't help and lays down an out of place herbal flavor middle to end while the burnt grain tosses a vague smoky note into the mix. Finishes a little astringent and certainly bitter.

They'd be better off removing chocolate from the label as most people will associate sweet flavors with this beer. Overall, it's a muddled mess, and the flavors just mesh together--not completely undrinkable, but the bitter astringent flavors are hard to swallow after a while.

22 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with a thin light tan head that quickly diminishes to a thin film.

The aroma is grains, fudgy chocolate, and acidic coffee.

The flavor is sweet and roasted chocolate malts with a balancing acidic coffee finish. The alcohol is well hidden. As it warms, some bitter black licorice comes out. The mouthfeel is medium to full with low but sharp carbonation.

Overall, a very nice stout - one of FCB's better efforts.

22 ounce bomber, w/o freshness info. Pours black, under a rich and creamy dark tan head, nice amounts of lacing. Nose is all about the chocolate and cafe au lait. Rich chocolaty notes, gooey browney sensations, milk shake consistency for this yummy full flavor stout. Big and bold, this one went nicely with some pork tenderloin, I'm sure it would be a fine partner to some chocolaty/raspberry type dessert. Stout lovers go get some of this well crafted stuff.

Poured into my pint glass this brew pours like a dark porter that is over-carbonated. The extremely bubbly head fades away quickly and leaves little lace. Not impressive at all.

S: The aroma is not as rich as the bottle claims. As a matter of fact it is rather bland. There is some roastiness, and some coffee and chocolate, but the aromas are not very pronounced at all.

T: Flavor follows suite. Bland with roast notes and a slight chocolate flavor. A small hop after taste is present. I've had brown ales that were bolder and bigger then this stout.

MF: A little watered down and thin. Carbonation is ok at best.

D: Drinkability is a little rough, even at just over 8.1%.

Over all, this is my first brew from Fort Collins and I'm not impressed at all. This double chocolate stout should be branded as an ok Imperial Porter. Double the chocolate, double the malt, up the hop bill by a quarter, and give this brew some balls.

I took my 22 oz bottle and managed almost 2 pint glasses from it. This is very dark beer. Almost black, but with enough rust around the edge and brown in the sticky foamy head that you realize it is dark, dark, dark oily brown. It reminded me a bit of Rogue's Chocolate, but probably because I wanted THAT.

The bubbly head didn't last through the whole glass. Actually, it didn't even last through the first third. I was yakking on the phone to a friend and took a big swig without really thinking, and was smacked with a mouthful of bitter chocolate and roasted coffee. One glass into my bottle, and I was feeling a little light headed. This isn't a "thick" feeling beer, but it is a tiny bit grainy. There was the typical dry aftertaste, but seemed a little more bitter and greasy than normal.

Appears dark burnt black roasted malt absolutely no ruby highlights making it through, deep tan khaki head forms thick rises above the rim of my Allagash chalice. Aroma is full of cocoa, dark roasted malt bitterness, and minimal coffee roasts. Mild fruit notes and minimal hops would wrap up the rest of the aroma in this beer. A bit of cedar and smoked malt even though I know it's not smoked come through a bit as it warms. Flavor has deep dark chocolate and creamy cocoa layers as well in the same breath. Oxymoron you say, it's a chocolate beer with depth, like somebody actually used it in the boil. Goes well with kettle cooked salty chips to give a ying to the yang of sweet and sultry you need salty and fatty. Mouthfeel is creamy at first with a finishing bitter dark chocolate tone, it all goes down fairly well for me. I can't complain at all about this brew dark malts and hops brings out the best of the parts of a double chocolate stout. Full bodied softly carbonated smooth big chocolate beer from CO. Drinkability overall was solid from front to back do share this one or it becomes a bit of a dessert beer better in the 7 oz zone than the 22 oz portion size. Overall tasty but super chocolate infusion equals more friends to the tasting.

The first thing I noticed was when opening this beer, it was low on smoke, hardly any schmoke floated out of this beer. : -( The view was ok but unimpressive. A dark beer with a decent head. A smidgeon above average. My favorite aspect of this beer though is the aroma. Nice chocolatte aromas arose clearly to my senses. It was like sniffing a nice chocolate bar. Pure chocolatte on the mild side....just like I love my women!

There is a let down in flavors. It was chocolate, simply chocolate and it was lightly sweet. The issue here this does not quite measure up to the few double chocolates that I have had in the past. I mean to compare this beer to Young's Double Chocolate or Rogue's Chocolate Stout, this is nowhere in their league. Thus, the lower score was given. Some might like a milder thinner chocolate dominated flavored beer, then this would be a nice one. This rides more like a an ale than a stout in a way. In that regards, one might enjoy it. It reminds me of the New Belgium's dark ale 1554 Enlightened Black Ale which I like to think is pretty good, but this is not a rich thick well bodied smooth chocolate stout.

There is nothing wrong with the texture of the beer. Again I find it a little thin for a stout. Some might even find it a bit watery. This not a bad beer, it just doesn't measure up to my standards.

That's enough on this beer. It is made to go with the music of one of the western United States cool headed nature motivated jazz men from the 60s and 70s. That man is drummer Jerry Grannelli who taught at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, CO. The specific cds to check out is a duet cd with JAY CLAYTON on Sound Songs or Iron Sky with Jeff Reilly smoking in on bass clarinet. I always thought Jerry might have a performance with some of the Oregon guys.

Jerry Grannelli probably does alright. He gets a cut on the lp 'A Charlie Brown Christmas" ... Yes, Jerry was the excellent drummer on Vincent Guaraldi outstanding album for the classic TV special!

Poured from a slightly chilled bomber into a tulip glass.

A-Black as night with a foamy tan head that settles rapidly but laces nicely.

S-Roasted coffee and semi-sweet chocolate. Malt. Pretty decent, but nothing to write home about.

T-Taste is exactly like the nose, with a bit of licorice and a lingering bitter aftertaste. Not a big beer, not one that will wow you with complexity, but a solid brew overall.

M-Medium mouthfeel and carbonation

D-This is pretty drinkable, but there are plenty of other stouts that are killer and there is really no reason this is giving me to buy it again (other than it's $3.99 price tag, and it just isn't enough)

A: Poured a dark brown/black with a one finger tan head on top. Moderate retention with some thin lacing that sticks around.

S: Some chocolate for sure, and some roasted malt, but on the lighter side for "double chocolate stout".

T: Lightly roasted, light dark fruit, some chocolate, some dark fruit too. There is an earthy component as well.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, a little thinner than expected, can't tell that the beer is 8.10%.

O: Not bad, was hoping for a bit more chocolate considering its name, and not as sweet as I was hoping either. Not a bad beer, but nothing I would be clamoring to drink again.

Pours a remarkably frothy head of toasted light brown cream, although it sinks a little too soon. The color is jet black, and there are some psychedelic lace drippings clinging to the glass.

Chocolate is what the label promises, and chocolate is what the nose gets. All kinds of milky, sweet, comforting chocolate aromas greet the nose, with other candy-like elements coming in, especially caramel and toffee. Some juicy dark fruit too (plum, fig) although not any coffee, which is something the label boasts. Maybe they mean it's in the taste...

There's definitely some coffee in the taste, having a slightly acidic, acrid bitterness...however, this is totally subservient to the chocolate character. The chocolate is of a sweeter, less bitter variety than you get in other chocolate stouts, but never overly saccharine. Has a healthy graham cracker character too. There's a nice layer of fresh cream/milk, lending its own peculiar sweetness, and there's a bit of bittersweet baking chocolate in the finish, which seems to bring back the coffee flavor. Alcohol barely even figures in here.

Smoothness butts right up against tingle, as this is round and sticky on one hand, but healthily carbonated on the other. The balance exhibited here makes it work, and nicely.

I say this with total respect for the Bros.: please don't take their review as gospel, check out some other reviews and check this out for yourself. This is wonderful if you're into big, full-flavored, well-rounded chocolate and/or coffee stouts. I'm hoping the Bros. just got an infected/expired bottle or something.

A- Pours black, good tan head, but the head did not retain well.

S-Like a hershey bar. Very milk chocolatey, just a faint undertone of roasted coffee.

T-Chocolatey and roasty. Really a very tasty beer. Could have more chocolate, but i really enjoyed it.

M-maybe a little thin for me. I like my Imp Stouts to have a heavier mouthfeel than this. It is more carbonated than i expected.

D-Definately something i could have more than one of. Id love to have it on draft. At 8% its not too much to have a couple of.

A - A good two fingers of creamy brown cream sits solidly atop a wood varnish deep brown that looks purely black when not in direct light. Lots of really nice lace is deposited around the edges of the glass, and the head shows staying power for such a high ABV brew. Looks decadent and a chocolate mousse desert.

S - The scent of double chocolate chip cookies straight out of the oven drifts over to me before I even put my nose to the glass. Schnoz to snifter, I smell even more of that fattening 2X choc-o-late chip cookie aroma, with loads of peanut butter and peanut brittle notes too. This smells like one of those chocolate fountains that people have at weddings, or melted chocolate fondue with shortcake and cookie dough hunks to submerse in it. Almonds, walnuts, and cashews drizzled with Hersey's liquid chocolate. I'm gaining weight just smelling this puppy!

T - Not exactly like the nose, this flavor is nonetheless quite extraordinary. There is a lot more hop and roasted coffee flavors than the sweet and dessert like nose suggests. Grassy, almost herbal hops and a dark espresso flavor make this a more balance beer than some other super sweet chocolate stouts.

M - Full bodied with a very small amount of carbonation. This is super sugar coated, but the dry finish and chalky espresso bitterness help keep it our of "cloying" territory.

D - A damn fine dessert beer for a cold winter's night after a fine meal. This has almost no potential as a session beer IMO, but that wasn't the brewer's intention anyhow. Good stuff, but it didn't blow my socks off like I thought it might.

Pours a deep, dark black with a mountain of dense, brown head that has great retention. The nose has notes of roasted malts and coffee. The taste is dominated by coffee and roasted malts with only the slightest chocolate notes coming through in the finish. This is actually pretty bitter for a stout. There's a pretty intense hop bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, but thin and dry. It's well carbonated and drinkable though.

I'm disappointed in this one. The name says chocolate but it's hardly there. The coffee notes dominate throughout, the bitterness is a little much, and the mouthfeel is far too dry for me. It is ultimately drinkable, and not a bad stout by any means. I just don't think I'll seek this one out again.

appearance: poured into hopleaf tulip, dark chestnut body with a creamy tan head and strong retention

smell: moderate roasty aromas, cocoa powder with some light bitterness, tones of coffee

taste: drinks more like a strong american stout than an imperial but has some nice things going on...lots of roasted flavors, char, bitter semi-sweet chocolate, espresso and cream. It doesnt jump out as a world class stout but its worth a shot

mouthfeel: a bit on the thin side

drinkability: good

Pours mostly black. There are lighter shades of brown peeking around the sides, but it's safe to call it black. The head forms gradually, up to a finger thick, with a light brown shade of multisized bubbles....resembling a root beer head. Retains well and has moderate lacing.

A little smoke in the nose to go with faint licorice, caramel, toffee and chocolate. Nothing in the nose is overwhelming or aggressive.

While the taste isn't bad, there's an artificial note to the chocolate. Maybe that's the 'double' part of the equation. It tastes like chocolate, but more like chocolate syrup. Lots of roasty grain notes. Any hop presence is muted by the malts.

It's fairly creamy and has plenty of sweet, but there's still that aspect of chocolate syrup that I can't get past. It's still got a nice feel to it, plus there's some high ABV to help out. Fairly thick and full bodied, it's got a bitter hotness in the syrupy finish.

It's a decent beer. I bought a four pack and am happy I did. Should be careful as this site lists the ABV as 8.1% as does their website, but the bottle shows 8.5% so sipping is advised.

Appearance: It pours a very dark, nearly black color. Very little light getting through at the edges. It's topped with a mocha colored head that's about two fingers deep. Retention was very good and left a nice web of lace lining the glass.

Smell: Roasted malts seem to be the main attraction. There's a healthy dose of chocolate in there, but the roasted malts are stronger. There's a secondary coffee aroma that's a nice touch. It's a little more hoppy than I would've guessed. They seem to be a little earthy in character. A little alcohol is noted, but it's masked pretty well.

Taste: As the nose suggested, roasted malts are the focal point. A little surprising for a "double" chocolate stout. Nonetheless, there's plenty of chocolate in there. Just not as much as expected. There's is a nice coffee/espresso taste that makes it interesting. Hops are again surprisingly strong and give it a nice bitter kick toward the end. Alcohol is blended pretty well, but has a warming effect.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: It's got a (barely) medium body. It is too thin. That's perhaps the only real flaw it has. That being said, it's relatively smooth and goes down easy. Carbonation's pretty light (which probably saves it from a lower score). Drinkability is good. I'm enjoying the bomber.

Fort Collins did a pretty good job with this one. Frankly, it's better than I expected. I think it could use a little more chocolate to live up to the name. It also needs to be thickened. Other than that, this really is a good beer. Much better than I expected seeing the aggregate grade. Check it out and see for yourself.

Shared this with a friend, served in a pint glass.

I immediately see a resemblance to Rogue's Chocolate Stout. This beer, however, tastes more like beer, if that's not too vague a statement. There's big chocolate grains with a dark chocolate flavor that I found really appealing. This was a tasty beer, and I didn't find it too thick or cloying. It did seem a bit more like an imperial porter than a stout though. The roasted grains seemed very limited, but I guess that happens when you're trying to amp up the chocolate. Worth a try if you like chocolate beers.

Picked this up having never seen it before figured id give it a try.

A: Beautiful black color with nice brown head

S: Burnt coffee and choc.

T: Chocolate, roasty coffee, maybe a little caramel

M: Good creamy feel, smooth

D: For what i paid for this ($7.50ish) i though this is a solid Doub. Choc. Stout. I didnt find it as boozy as others have and would recommend this to anyone who enjoys this style.

Pours out a black color, opaque, and has a nice brown head. Sits thick in the glass.

Smells of chocolate and coffee.

I don't know why I'm the only one that tastes the chocolate in this. I know it wasn't exactly made with real chocolate, that anyone knows of, but it has the flavor. The chocolate got my attention right away. Some caramel flavor and a coffee blend in there too. The weak hops lingers on the back of your tongue in the aftertaste.

Creamy, full, and smooth.

I thought this was a good beer. Picked it up on a whim with a friend of mine and gave it a shot, really liked it. Kind of surprised it didn't get much love on here.

Pours mahogany with 2+ fingers of tan colored head. Great lacing & average head retention

S: Huge coffee nose, plus ample roasty malt, plus some iron & cocoa as this warms.

T: Roasty malt, dryness, & chocolate up front. Slight boozeyness as this warms, a touch of iron, singed grain & molasses surface once this warms. Finishes dry, a bit warm booze-wise, with much roastyness,plus a touch of iron . My one question: Where's the chocolate??

Very chewy, low carbonation with just a touch of oilyness

Drinks pretty easy, coffee slanted Imp stouts aren't in my wheelhouse, but I could put a few down on a cold morning, where's the grits & bacon?? Glad to see this brewery spread it's alewings again!

22 oz bottle into a tulip glass.

Pours a dense black with 2 fingers of creamy dark tan head. A thin layer of creamy retention leaves some decent looking spotty lacing behind. The aroma is straight up huge chocolate character that's so powerful, I can smell it lying here with my head at least 2 feet away from the glass. There is also some prominent coffee notes underneath as well as some other underlying sweetness and roasted malts. I'm also picking up a bit of alcohol heft in the bouquet.

The taste is once again heavy chocolate up front that melds into zippy coffee character and a sticky caramel sweetness. Finishes with a combo of light bitterness and some residual sweetness. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with an overall smooth and creamy feel. Much like the aroma, there is just a bit of heat in the body that probably helps push it up into the fuller category.

An interesting Stout that surely doesn't skimp on the as advertised Chocolate but it's character seemed just a little too "artificial" to call this anything more than a good effort. I still found this to be fairly tasty though and enjoyed splitting this bottle with the wife.

Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.

Appearance: One finger of an oppwhite head and pours a dark brown but a lot of light penetrates. I like my imperial stouts pitch black.

Smell: A little bit of chocolate, some roastiness, but I think I can honestly say that this just smells thin.

Taste: Like the nose there is a little bit of chocolate and some roast, but the taste leaves the mouth really fast. If it were a better taste I would wish it would stick around more, however I am indifferent in this situation. As it warms a little more bitterness comes out and it gets a little more chocolatey, however still nothing amazing.

Mouthfeel: Thin even though there is minimal carbonation.

Overall: It is okay but pales in comparison to so many other great options.

i liked this stout. Of course, the fact that it was on-tap made a world of difference, as I have found true with most beer tastings. The appearance was dark, it went down smoothly with no bitter aftertaste, and was thoroughly enjoyable. I could detect a slight hint of chocolate, but not enough to say it was a "chocolaty" beer. That 's a good thing; I dislike beers that have flavorings and spices added to them, often to disguise the otherwise uninteresting flavor of the underlying brew. i will seek this one out again, but prefer it on-tap.
