There's chocolate in the name, though the brewery does not talk about brewing with actual chocolate. A decent amount of brown foam forms from a steady pour, good head retention. Nearly pitch black with some ruby edges when put to the light. Roasted grain that suggests unsweetened chocolate and used coffee grounds in the nose, with faint dark cherry and blackberry fruitiness in the back. Burnt flavors come off a little bitter with unsweetened, bitter dark chocolate and more coffee grounds on the taste buds. Mildly warming alcohol, maltiness seems to be stuck on burnt. Hop bitterness doesn't help and lays down an out of place herbal flavor middle to end while the burnt grain tosses a vague smoky note into the mix. Finishes a little astringent and certainly bitter.
They'd be better off removing chocolate from the label as most people will associate sweet flavors with this beer. Overall, it's a muddled mess, and the flavors just mesh together--not completely undrinkable, but the bitter astringent flavors are hard to swallow after a while.
