no wonder this got me so tipsy, its over 10% abv! i would have never ever guessed that, its so well hidden here, this bad boy can really sneak up on you. a great food beer, better than almost anything I've had from these guys too. its clear dark amber red in color with a decently long lasting off white head. smokey nose, definitely some smoked malt in here, not rauchbier heavy, but getting there, its big. the grains are fresh and less sweet than so many dopplebocks, also less weight to the body, which i guess is why it went down so silky for me. i had this with bbq chicken, and thought the grill flavors went really well with the malt and smoke of this bock, and the lager yeast cleans up the palate so well for all the bold flavors there. i also used some of the beer in mu bbq sauce, which united the two elements really well, and may become a staple of the sauce, it adds so much. don't know how the lager yeast can get it this strong, but it does, cool strain, well done. fort collins gets a bad rap for so many lackluster beers, i think they deserve a little more credit for when they get one right. this is right, its really good, and ill look forward to its next release. not enough authentic german stuff going on, and this on gets me there. huge though, share yours or get lit up!

I picked up a bottle of Fort Collins Brewing's Doppelbock a couple weeks ago for $3.99 at The Lager Mill. I was in the mood for a Dopplebock and the price was right so I decided to give a try, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date, 2012 Fall vintage. Poured from a brown 22oz bottle into a snifter.

A- The label is pretty well drawn with a nice picture of some goats, I like it, it's weird how pretty much every Doppelbock has a goat on it. It poured a muddy red/brown color that took on some nice ruby and amber hues when held to the light with two fingers worth of slightly darker tan head that died down to a thin layer that left some nice decent behind. This is a good looking beer, the color is pretty nice.

S- The aroma starts off with a slightly higher amount of sweetness followed by a nice medium smokey campfire like aroma. Up next comes the malts which impart some nice toffee, light caramel, sweet bread and dark dried fruits with raisin seeming to stick out the most and there's also a medium boozy aroma. This beer had a pretty good aroma, the sweet and smokey malt aromas were nice and it was very similar to Dark Horse's Scotty Karate.

T- The taste seems to be fairly similar to the aroma and it starts off with a high amount of sweetness followed by lots of malts which impart some nice toffee, sweetbread, and a nice mixture of dark dried fruit flavors. Up next comes the smokey malts which don't stick out as much as they did in the aroma and they impart a lighter amount of medium smokey flavors. On the finish there's pretty much no bitterness, just some more sweetness with just a little bit of slightly warming alcohol and it had a sweet, malty, and dark fruit like aftertaste. This beer had a nice taste, but It was a little too sweet and I wish the smoke stuck out just a little bit more, but the alcohol was hidden very nicely.

M- Fairly smooth, sticky, cloying, slightly warming, full bodied with a slightly lower amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel was nice, but it was a little too sticky and cloying for my liking.

Overall I thought this was nice beer and a decent example of the style, it had some nice malty and smokey aspects but the sweetness was a little out of control. This beer wasn't too drinkable, it was fairly smooth and the alcohol was hidden nicely and the flavors did a decent job at holding my attention, but it's too sweet for me to drink the whole bottle and splitting it with someone is the way to go for me, I don't think I could drink a whole bottle by myself. What I liked the most about this beer was the appearance and aroma, they were both good and I really liked how well the alcohol was hidden. What I liked the least about this beer was how cloyingly sweet it was, I haven't had a Doppelbock that was this sweet in a while, I wish they toned down the sweetness. I would buy another bottle of this to put in the cellar and see how it develops, but it isn't anything that I would drink on a regular basis, but the price was really nice, you hardly ever see a decent beer above 10% for under $4, it's a good deal and I would recommend giving it a try. All in All I thought this beer was OK, I think it would be pretty good if the sweetness was toned down some, it's not great, but it's not bad. I'm interested in checking out beers from Fort Collins Brewery.

A- Dark reddish brown with a good head

S- Smokey at fist, followed by some sweet toffee smells.

T- Very sweet and malty, almost like toffee, with a touch of smoke. Not hoppy or bitter at all. Pretty simple flavor profile.

M- A good, full mouthfeel.

O- Not bad at all, but not super amazing or impressive. If you want a doppelbock, there are better ones. If you want a smoked beer, there are better ones. If you want a blend of the two...This is a decent choice.
