22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours hazy dark ruby red color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of huge caramel, toffee, toast, brown bread, brown sugar, light chocolate, raisin, fig, date, wood smoke, tobacco, nuttiness, and smoke/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready/smoked malt and yeast fruitiness; with great strength. Taste of huge caramel, toffee, toast, brown bread, brown sugar, light chocolate, raisin, fig, date, wood smoke, tobacco, nuttiness, and smoke/toasted earthiness. Minimal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, toast, brown bread, brown sugar, light chocolate, nuttiness, raisin, fig, date, wood smoke, tobacco, and smoke/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/smoked malt and yeast fruitiness; with zero cloying sweetness on the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and lightly slick/bready mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is an incredible smoked doppelbock! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/smoked malt and yeast fruitiness; and dangerously smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

no wonder this got me so tipsy, its over 10% abv! i would have never ever guessed that, its so well hidden here, this bad boy can really sneak up on you. a great food beer, better than almost anything I've had from these guys too. its clear dark amber red in color with a decently long lasting off white head. smokey nose, definitely some smoked malt in here, not rauchbier heavy, but getting there, its big. the grains are fresh and less sweet than so many dopplebocks, also less weight to the body, which i guess is why it went down so silky for me. i had this with bbq chicken, and thought the grill flavors went really well with the malt and smoke of this bock, and the lager yeast cleans up the palate so well for all the bold flavors there. i also used some of the beer in mu bbq sauce, which united the two elements really well, and may become a staple of the sauce, it adds so much. don't know how the lager yeast can get it this strong, but it does, cool strain, well done. fort collins gets a bad rap for so many lackluster beers, i think they deserve a little more credit for when they get one right. this is right, its really good, and ill look forward to its next release. not enough authentic german stuff going on, and this on gets me there. huge though, share yours or get lit up!
