From a 32 oz jug.

Poured a clear, red-brown mahogany color with tall, light brown foam that persisted and left some lace as it contracted. The smell was of caramel and cocoa with a bit of grain. The taste was sort of woody and herbal with some chocolate and cocoa and dry caramel. There was almost a whisky barrel taste upfront. Not much in the way of hop flavors. The mouthfeel was dry and crisp with medium body and roasty malt note lingering, with a somewhat woody aftertaste. This was an OK beer at a good, low price.

Initially I bought this beer merely for the jug, which is pretty cool for such an inexpensive beer.

The pour was dark ruby with a light tan head of big bubbles that quickly settles down. There is a bit of lacing, but nothing too rich.

The aroma is grainy malty, for the most part. It has a bit of character, which is more than I expected.

The taste is pretty crisp for a dark beer, but there are caramel malt notes that are pretty pleasant. It finishes crisp with a nice hop balance, but not over-hopped.

Overall, this is a pretty good hybrid beer. It's dark and rich enough to have some body and flavor, and yet refreshing enough for a hot summer day. If you're looking for the traditional Guinness/Smithwicks black and tan, this ain't it, but if you want a nice session beer with a little character, this will serve nicely.

Pours a sexy brown with a ruby hint through the middle, topped with a half an inch of beige head.
Smells got a sweet malt note.
Taste has the thicker malts on the front finishing with a sweet hop notes on the back.
The pilsner is the finisher here, it is crisp, there is a short malted after-taste.
Drinks very well, solid brew.

A: Pours dark. Brown with a bit of red tint. Reddish tan head dissipates quick.

S: Sweet and malty. A little bit of chocolate but not much.

T: Not bad, actually. Nothing to write home about but what it does, it does well. There is definitely a lot of chocolate in the porter part but it sort of clashes with the skunk of the pilsner in a pleasant way.

M: Sort of weak, unfortunately. Thin, almost like Gatorade or something.

D: Definitely. There's really no bite to this beer, and, like it or not, that makes it very easy to drink a lot of.

This thing pours a brownish red, much like a cola. It gives you about a finger or so of head that dissipates within a minute or so.

It smells much like a pilsner with hint of malt and an odd, almost metallic note to it.

It has that clean, crisp lagerish taste and feel to it but there's only a vague touch of malt there and there is definitely some grain or cereal there.. There is also something almost metallic and unpleasant in there as well.

It is well carbonated and watery. Watery as hell for a beer of this color. Crisp? Sure. Refreshing? Eh. Lacing? Yeah right.

I regret buying this and I don't say that often. This is a basically a cheap , dark adjunct lager with a nasty undertaste. The bottle is the only good thing about it.

Stay away. Far, far away.

The most boring beer ever. There is no porter in this, maybe a weak pilsener was used to wash out a weak brown ale, but there are no interesting flavors, it is the blandest beer I have ever drank, I think the Heinz corporation had something to do with this.

Quart bottle/jug poured into an imperial pint glass.

A- The body was a clean, deep brown that revealed light-medium carbonation which looked a little odd as a bunch of big bubbles just hung out at the bottom of the glass before slowly releasing. The head was a solid 1-finger, light tan that dropped to a full lace leaving some pretty nice sticky spots.

S- The aroma was pretty bland. There was some light caramel scent and light hopping.

T- It's an interesting mix. Initially, I picked up a fairly thin flavor, but more of the caramel and coffee-like flavors kicked in late with some light hops (maybe citrus) to clean things up. All-in-all it was a little underwhelming.

M- Clean feel with a little bite from the carbonation. Again, a little thin and clean for my taste.

D- It's pretty easy to put back, but not something I'm going to seek out. I'd seen this beer for a number of years and my curiosity got the better of me. I will say it was really cheap, $3.49 for a quart. If money was low and availability lower, I might pick it up again. Otherwise, not something I'd buy.

Overall- It's tough to review a pre-made black and tan as normally it's something that gets mixed at the tap as a bit of a niche drink. This bottled version wasn't overly impressive.

A-It's got a nice dark tan texture to it. The description on the bottle says it all.

S-It's got a coffee like smell to it. It smells pretty good.

T- It tastes a tad like Bass with a hint of coffee to it. At least to me it had a coffee taste. It's got a nice even taste. It's not too strong and not too weak. It's a happy medium.

M-It feels good when swallowing. It leaves a mild aftertaste but it's a good aftertaste.

D-Well I drank the whole jug w/ no problem and enjoyed myself so that spoke for itself.

Overall, I recommend this beer. If you find it, it's worth having. It goes well when watching a movie too.

A neat 22oz moonshine jug poured into a mug

Mississippi Black and Tan poured a "burnt" brownish color with a small tan head that "took-off-running" rather quickly leaving behind very limited lacing. The nose, the weakest part of this black and tan is of very faint malts. The flavor is a little sweet chocolate with hardly any hop presence. The body is light and crisp in the mouth with light carbonation.

This is a very easy drinking Black and Tan. The jug rates a 5!

Pours a dark brown color with good hea formation and lacing. Smell was not strong and smelled of dark fruits, figs, raisins and etc. Taste was of a dark ale with dark fruits being very prominent over the malt and other flavors. Though the Dark Fruit was not powerfull. Mouthfeel was not bad and the carbonation was pretty minimal. I would probably not purchase this for a little while as this beer just didn't hit spot for me.

A - Pours bright nut brown/ garnet color with 1/2 inch off-white bubbly head that leaves some lacing on it's recession to a thin ring.

S - Dark fruit/ moderately roasted malts with minor earthy hop aroma in the background.

T - Follows smell with mild bitterness.

M - Dry finish. Some lingering bitterness. No shortage of carbonation bite. Leaves the throat warm.

D - Fairly drinkable. I will finish the bottle.

Overall - Not too bad. Better than expected actually.

A quart of Mississippi Mud, which, is said to be a mixture of classic porter and continental pilsner from the Mississippi Brewing Company, Utica, NY. Utica isn't anywhere near Mississippi, the Mississippi River, or an alligator like the one depicted on the faux stone bottle. Something a little amiss here?

A removal of the screw cap reveals a dark nutty brown brew with modest head that managed to leave some lacing on the glass. This, as I was soon to find out, was by far the best part of the beer.

The aroma was mostly caramel complemented by buttery toffee with some hops penetrating through. A thin palate disappoints. Malty flavors dominate in the beginning, but are usurped by an unpleasantness toward the finish that, unfortunately, lingers after the beer is through. Some have characterized the unpleasantness as metallic mineral water, and I don't disagree.

Not something I would not seek out again. The cheap price ($3/quart) and flashy bottle is, apparently, the marketing strategy of this beer, clearly not the repeat costumer.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a pint glass

The color is a dark amber, an almost red hue with a foamy white head.

The smell is not too strong. Slight hints of maple and some malts.

The taste is a little maple with hints of hops anda touch of malts.

This beer goes down smooth and has a nice porter feel to this beer but alot of the flavor is a bit muted.

Beer poured into a Guinness imperial pint glass forms a fluffy off white 3 finger head. Beer exhibits a gorgeous, dark mohagany color. Smell is disappointing, doesn't smell bad, but can't detect much other than some faint malts. Taste starts with some nice malts and then everything just disappears. Almost like a movie where the first 10 minutes is great and then everything else disappoints. Beer is light bodied and smooth. A simple, easy to drink beer and that's about it.

Looked promising enough, except that the only thing Mississippi about it is the name. Utica NY? Pours a nice foamy head then quickly dies to thin thin lace. Aroma is malty and chocolate. Taste is roasted malts some sweetness. Some weird aftertaste that's not pleasant. Not recommended.

Is it just me, or does this taste like Schlitz Malt Liquor? Or Olde English 800? Or, well, you get the idea. Swampy smell and taste. Nothing like the package suggests. "Continental Pilsner"?, "robust English Porter"? My arse. Definitely won't buy again, BUT will keep the bottle. Very cool bottle.

Bought this on impulse because of the great looking bottle. The appearance was quite nice. The smell, however, was not impressive and the taste, what taste there was, was in a word awful. I agree with the other reviewers that it tastes like over carbonated water with some metal and a little stale beer flavor. Alka Seltzer is better.
A promising start but it turned out to be a drain pour. Never again!

This is a beautiful beer. Brilliantly clear, deep ruby in color with a rich brown tint. Glowing. It has a tall, frothy, cream-colored head that lasts and sticks to the sides of the glass.

Smells of rich pilsner malt balanced with floral, slightly resinous hops. Subtle hints of caramels and toffee underneath.

This is where the beer falls flat on its face. Upfront there is dusty malt and minimal hop bitterness. The flavor disappears in the middle, only to come back as metallic mineral water that lasts into the aftertaste. Really nothing pleasant about it. Tastes like carbonated mineral water with a touch of stale beer added for flavoring. I had to check the previous reviews before posting this to make sure I hadn't gotten a bad bottle. Looks like a lot of other people had a similar experience.

The mouthfeel is light, the carbonation is moderate, and the finish is watery.

I was very disappointed with this beer. The cool bottle and name got me excited, and then the appearance and aroma took me to a new level of anticipation. Upon the first sip, I was convinced that the beer had gone bad. I thought to myself, "Can oxidation really destroy a beer this severely?" I checked the reviews on this site, and sure enough, my bottle was not spoiled. Or maybe everyone got spoiled bottles. In any case, if you buy this beer, it will most likely taste like mine did. I live by the philosophy "Try everything at least once," and I have to say this beer makes me question that advice.

A. Crystal clear ruby amber. Smell head leaving only a thin line of foam. Bottle is awesome.

S. Hints of roasted coffee, almost no smell.

T. Taste of metal. Almost no flavor. Hints of roasted coffee and a lot of nothing.

M. Light watery and unimpressive.

D. I could drink more then a few of these. Beer is not that good but the bottle will look great in the collection.

A- As of this review, this is the best looking beer bottle out there! The product inside is decent looking as well...clear, dark brown/chestnut color and a thick brownish head that turns into a thin layer that actually sticks around. There is some good lacing that sticks to the glass! Great start!

S- This has some sweet malt aromas that remind me of a brown ale but at the same time they are balanced out by some hop bitterness. Toffee notes are also detectable along with some mild coffee tones as well.

T- Tastes much like it smells. Good biscuit flavors with sweet malts that are balanced out by a decent hop bitterness on the finish. Reminds me of the dark chocolate toblerone bar that I had at X-Mas. Coffee, and molasses flavors are also detectable.

M- This is the only area that I'm a little disappointed with. I thought that this would have more of a medium body but it is on the watery side...I guess due to the lager that's mixed into this and the carbonation is just a little on the heavy side...oh well, I guess nothing is perfect.

D- While I won't have any issues drinking the entire bottle of this myself, I would probably rather share some of this with somebody. While this is a flavorful beer, it's not the most refreshing. With that said though, I recommend this one and will purchase this again!

Poured from an almost 1L jug to pint glass.

A: Dark brown with touches of amber lining. Small off-white head with ok retention and no lacing.

S: Malty with caramel and some hops.

T: Pilsner comes out in front and becomes caramely as the porter flavor kicks in and finishes with a weak coffee overtone.

Overall: Not a huge fan, I feel that the style can be done much better and not taste like two poor beers poured into a glass...cool just though.

S: Some thin roasted malt aroma. Rather metallic and mineral in the nose.

T: Mildly sweet, toasty malts up front. A mineral hop quality. Extremely seltzery and metallic into the finish. A cloying, sugary taste as well.

M: Thin, seltzery, crisp. A riding, cloying, metallic finish adds nothing to the enjoyment of this beer.
