A- Deep black with dark brown highlights. Light tan head is small and fades quickly leaving a bit of lace.
S- A bit like a can of coffee grounds with definitive roast and light ash qualities. There is also wood, earth and chocolate. Very complex.
T- Similar to the nose, the coffee qualities of the malt and chicory dominate with a bit of woody and even fruity character also shining through. Very harmonious balance of elements. Finishes with a slightly sweet herbal quality that I find soothing.
M- A bit thin and low on carbonation. Making this more mouth filling with some chewiness would have enhanced the "stoutness".
D- This is a really nice beer. My first thought upon trying it was "why don't all stouts have chicory?" it's that good. While the thinness of the mouth leaves some to be desired, I wouldn't change a thing about the flavor.
