Poured into a pint glass
A - Pours jet black with the slightest tinge of ruby-brown near the sides and bottom of the glass. One finger brown head, which dwindles quickly. Impressive lacing all the way through the glass.
S - Good strong aroma of coffee, cocoa, burnt grains, ash, and charcoal. Smells inviting.
T - Black (slightly burnt) coffee, toffee, caramel, bakers chocolate, and bark-like wood which I'm guessing is the Chicory. Finishes with a dry bitter drextrin flavor and a slight soapy astringency. Hmmm.
M - Medium bodied with subtle carbination which I found appropriate, but a little on the thin side for the style. For a stout with this many "burnt" characteristics, I wanted it to be chewier and it never happened. Disappointing. I would love to taste an "imperial" version of the same recipe.
O - A worthy coffee stout, but ultimately falls a little short for me. Where I wanted a lingering coffee/chocolate taste, I got bitter dextrin. Where I wanted a big chewy "bite", I got thinness. There are better stouts out there for the price, so I'm not 100% sure I'd rush out to buy this again.
