While not up to the standards set by other DFH beers (like 90 Min. IPA, etc.), since those beers are VERY good, that makes this merely a good beer.
It poured a dark brown, almost black, with a dark tan head (not bone-white like it says on the label) that faded fast. Aromas of chocolate, currant. The tastes were chocolate, mild coffee, currant, grapefruit, and yeasty dark bread. The mouthfeel was light, maybe a tad light for a stout, but also smooth, with mild carbonation. It finished smooth, with light chocolate and coffee.
It should be noted that, while it was sampled/reviewed in Dec. 2003, this has been in my cellar since Spring 2003, so it's been aging for at least 7 months. Maybe that's why I didn't get any of the harshness or disparate flavors noted by other reviewers. So, drink one now, and save one for later;see what you think!
