Poured this one into a glass; created a thick tan head. A little lacing stuck to the side of the glass for a few moments when tipped. The brew was dark brown, and with little light able to shine through at all I couldn't tell how many bubbles there were.
The smell was toasty, with some burnt grains noticeable.
A bold flavor of black coffee is immediately apparent. In the background, some milder spices, vanilla, and smokiness are pushed aside by the somewhat-overbearing coffee flavor. Very strong flavor, so this one is not a good choice unless you really like coffee. Lucky for me, I tend to be a fan of coffee-flavored things, but still the lack of balance limits what could be a very complex and interesting beer.
The mouthfeel was smooth and even, no particular complaints here.
Overall an interesting beer. I'm glad to have tried it, and I think for anyone who likes coffee flavors it's worth a try. However, with every sip, I couldn't help wishing that there had been a little more balance in the taste.
