Beer #1 (of 13) from my beer purchase in Indiana.
Dogfish Head Chicory Stout pours dark as night into my pint glass. Completely opaque, with just the barest hint of a deep red around the edges when held up to the light. A 1/2" brown (definitely NOT bone white, as the label states) head forms, then dissipates within 5 minutes. Moderate carbonation; small amounts of lacing. The aroma is a (in sum, sweet) mixture of chicory, chocolate and coffee. Very straightforward, nothing complex.
The taste is initially very sweet, with chocolate and caramel/toffee flavors. After a little bit, the coffeelike roasted flavor comes through, with just a hint of floral hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is creamy and slightly thin/watery; this beer is slightly acidic on the tongue. Finishes somewhat dry, with an acidic and mildly bitter aftertaste.
Overall, this a decent session stout; I imagine that it pairs very well with chocolate- and coffee-flavored deserts. Worth checking out.
