Apperance: Dark tan head, lacing is smooth and grasps onto the glass. The head is a mix of large and tiny bubbles, making it rocky at a second or two. the beer is almost black, well no, it is black. head retention is minimal, is anything.
Nose: The nose was a bit of a let down. I got charcoal, dark roasted bread, or burnt toast. Instead of roasted it smelled burnt. maybe a tiny bit of chocolate.
Taste: Nice immediate mouthfeel, but very thin once you think about it. This was too thin to be a stout, it feels like a thin porter. the taste is an increase of the nose. Mostly what I smelled was what I tasted. there was a certain bitterness at the end, this bitterness stays with you for a bit. I think I taste coffee with no sugar or cream, just straght black coffee. This is an odd mix with a stout as the astringent taste of coffe does not lend itself well to a stout.
Notes: An interesting thing to try. This is not my favorite stout, and I did not even find it altogether appealing. The creativity and craft is what I love about Dogfish, not their perfection. Very interesting beers come from Dogfish, this is one of them. I praise them for that.
