Pours a clear dark coppery amber. A fizzy off-white head falls quickly to nothing. Not even ghost of a cap or a ring. Nothing. It's a nice color, but it just sits there like flat soda.
Aroma is at first raisiny sweetness but moves into dark fruits and caramel with a deep whiff. A hint of spice.
Flavor has a deep malt character, a solid blended sweetness. It's not very specific though. A very mild bitterness in the finish doesn't really compete with the malt, but does accent it. A hint of grace in an otherwise monotone malt landscape.
Medium body with a kick of alcoholic heat and dryness which would be more forgivable if it accompanied more flavor.
Sorry Dogfish Head, you disappoint.

Can't believe I've never reviewed this. Should be interesting, as it's almost 4 years old.
Pours a murky medium brown with copper highlights and a frothy khaki head that lingers as a thin layer of foam.
Raisins, prunes, and plums leap from the glass, along with brown sugar sweetness. Almost has a Belgian yeast nose to it.
Flavor is much less sweet, with slightly tart raisins and prunes underlying a lightly toasted, bready malt character. The finish reveals prunes and slightly earthy and bitter notes. The sour character is somewhat disappointing. Belgian yeast notes emerge late.
Body is on the full side, with moderate carbonation and noted alcohol warmth.
This one held up well. There's a touch of oxidation in the form of cardboard, but that was minute. Wish the flavor matched the aroma more. That tangy character is just too present.
