Another interesting creation from Dogfish Head. This is beefy for a medium body strong dark ale. A hazy dark mahogany color filled the glass. The nose is decent with tones of caramel, sugar, raisins, and malts. The alcohol kicks you in the tastebuds! Complex mix of alcohol, malts, and fruits.

This one gets better as I sip. D train likes the complexity of this strong ale. And of course the 8% abv doesn't hurt.

Drank this brew out of the bottle at cellar temperature. Couldn't really see it through the dark glass bottle. I'm sure it looked nice. It also smelled good, but I couldn't get a very good feel for all that had to offer front just the neck of the bottle. Well, it wasn't ideal, but I sure wanted the beer and didn't have a glass handy.

This is a very sweet brew, surprisingly so for the type of beer it is supposed to be. Not that it was bad, just a big sweetness with some figs preserve flavor.

It was a tingly brew on the tongue, but not overly carbonated. It was very pleasant overall.

Given the sweetness of this beer, I wouldn't want to kick back and drink bottle after bottle of this beer. It is worth picking up a few to sample though.

Cheers.

Pours a nice chocolate brown with an impressive head. Head's gone quick with no lacing though. Smells of sweet malts, chocolate, raisens (obviously), and a hint of alcohol. Now this is an interesting tasting beer. Had to take a few more sips to figure out what I'm tasting. First the obvious - prunes, raisens and dates, OH MY! Under that, lots of alcohol with little to no carbonation. Hops are not used to the best of their ability. Nice malt flavor on the finish, but a bit too dry. Not enough carbonation in the mouth for me. And, alas, not an incredibly quaffable beer. All in all I'd say a bit too complex without having any focus. Tastes all over the place. Still a very nice brew indeed, but overrated.

Poured from a bottle into a Dogfish Head snifter. The pour is a very nice looking clear mahogany with a thin lacing of foam on top. Lots of sweet fruit notes on the nose. Grape juice comes to mind. There is also a nice rich bready component to the aroma as well.

Nice medium body and a deliciously rich, sweet flavor. Lots of fresh bread and sweet fruit up front, most notably grapes, pears, and plums. The flavors dry out a bit at mid-palate and finish mild with just a touch of herbal spice. Very drinkable, but a bit bland on the back of the palate.

I don't know how many times I passed on this one. Finally, it was offered at my weekly beer tasting. I liked it and decided to take some home. Very glad I did. I assumed it was categorized as a fruit/vegetable beer. When I tried it, I thought it's flavor profile reminded me a lot of a dubbel, only lacking some of the rich maltiness. When I saw this was a Belgian Strong Dark Ale, I definitely agreed. It's a very nice beer and I'm glad we have a brewer like DFH who is willing to constantly try new things.
