Package: 1 pint 9.6 oz. corked and caged clear bottle. Parchment-colored label with an explanation of beer’s inspiration from an ancient recipe including honey, muscat grapes, and saffron. Listed at 9% ABV. Also sampled in 12oz. bottles.

Cost: $7.99 per bottle at Shop-Rite.

Presentation: snifter at ~45-50º.

Appearance: Poured a cloudy mustardy-yellow color, with hints of orange. Generated a fluffy but loose head that quickly resolved down to a thin collar. Not particularly distinguished.

Smell: This has a whole heck of a lot going on. The nose is predominantly sweet, with various hints of indefinite spices. No specific saffron note, but the muscat grapiness is evident (clearly resembles Italian Moscato).

Taste: I expected this to be sweet, and in fact, it was drier than I expected, almost like a brandy and soda; considering that Moscato or Muscat de Beaume des Venise are dessert wines. And, this has honey in it as well! It wasn’t the sweetness that put me off, but all of the other flavor elements that clamored for attention, none of them really effective or distinct. It did not have the finesse of the usual muscat elements of peach, apple, roses, and gentle citrus. Nor was the honey or malt effective in providing much of a flavor framework. Basically this was more like a home-brewed herbal soda or cream soda.

Mouthfeel: The bottle-conditioning was evident in the nicely soft mouthfeel and the fact that this did not become overtly cloying.

Drinkability: I have to give this a low drinkability score, as it neither works as a beer, aperitif, or wine substitute. While the alcohol is not overwhelming, it is noticeable.

Backwash: A grand, but ultimately failed experiment. While I admire Dogfish Head for another noble effort, I have to say that this is an answer to a question no one should have asked. I’d have to think that the “original” was served as a flat, viscous, liquid; perhaps even mulled or warmed. Midas Touch is a good name, as this beer suffers from the same problem Midas did; too much of a good thing. Do yourself a favor; go out and buy yourself a nice, inexpensive Moscato or Muscat de Beaumes des Venise. They will be cheaper, more interesting, and more refreshing.

NB: Avoid the 12oz. bottles in particular. Although marginally sweeter, they are much harsher and overtly alcoholic.

A: Light yellow-gold, no carbonation, only a ring of head. If I didn't know better I'd say it was a late-harvest white wine.

S: Honey, white grapes, a background of sweet barley. Far from a typical beer, but nice.

T: Grapes, honey, a little bit of a yeasty-chalky. It's good, decent finish.

M: Full bodied, a tad syrupy, but had a soft touch on the tongue still.

O: Unique, and a nice beer. Bonus points for the cool history which can't be quantified in the scores here. Lacking in a few areas, but I wouldn't mind another.
