Picked this up in Totowa recently since I've never had this before and it was rated so highly on here. This style seems to be a dime a doze nowadays but I wanted to give it a go since it seemed different than anything I've had before and this was from Dogfish Head. I've never had a bad IPA from them!
All expectations aside, this was certainly different as soon as I poured this out. The hue was a deep, rich oak with a hint of amber with nice carbonation. The head and lacing were nearly nowhere to be seen and the aroma wasn't solid but that was about the only setback to this beer. Lots and lots going on here, starting with the taste - oak, grapefruit, pine, and strong rosemary-like notes up front that beautifully melded into an oak and resin aftertaste that's about as smooth as anything I've ever had. The mouthfeel was spot on in terms of body and carbonation and the transition is as smooth from front to back as any beer I've ever had. The aftertaste was that of a bourbon-barrel without the stickiness or charcoal that accompanies that. Just a wonderful blend that somehow, works harmoniously from start to finish.
Yes, this was a strong beer and feels like one. The alcohol is prevalent ere and could be easily detected by the time the bottle was downed. That being said, it didn't detract from the taste and the resin character of the beer, tied everything in together well. Yes, this had the hoppy characteristic of a DIPA but the manner in which this beer was brewed makes it stand out from its West Coast counterparts. I paid enough for this single bottle but it had Dogfish Head on the label, as a reassurance. Sure enough, that was all I needed to see, as once again, these guys proved why they're the best as producing hoppy beers that stand above the pack. Highly recommended.
