Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice.
Appearance: Pours a deep and hazy brownish amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid two fingers of off white head with decent retention. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing.
Smell: An earthy and juicy hop forward aroma with good hints of citrus, wood, and sweet caramel. Upfront blend of earthy and floral hops with big hints of grass and pine resin. Citrus hop hints of orange, grapefruit, lemon, and mango. Barrel hints of oak, vanilla, and wood. Sweet malt presence with hints of caramel, biscuit, grains, and yeast. Sweet hints of brown sugar. Subtle dark fruit hints of raisin and dates. A very good aroma.
Taste: Like the aroma previews, a juicy and earthy hop forward taste with big notes of citrus, pine, wood, and caramel. Upfront juicy and oily taste of earthy and floral hops with notes of grass and pine resin. Citrus hop notes of grapefruit, orange, mango, and lemon. Solid balanced barrel presence with notes of wood, oak, and vanilla. Sweet bready malt with notes of caramel, biscuit, grains, yeast, and cracker. Sweet notes of brown sugar. Dark fruit undertones with notes of raisin, dates, and fig. A very good taste.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Oily and fairly chewy. Somewhat boozy but still fairly smooth for its size.
Overall: A really good twist on a imperial IPA. The barrel adds some interesting notes without overwhelming the hops. A very good balanced blend.
