American Double / Imperial IPA |  10.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
This oak-aged gentle giant has been gaining popularity over the past few years and is now available year-round.

For Burton Baton, we brew two "threads," or batches, of beer: an English-style old ale and an imperial IPA.

After fementating the beers separately in our stainless tanks, they're transferred and blended together in one of our large oak tanks. Burton Baton sits on the wood for about a month.

When enjoying the Burton Baton, you'll find an awesome blend of the citrus notes from Northwestern hops melding with woody, vanilla notes from the oak. The wood also tends to mellow the 10% ABV of Burton, so tread cautiously!

Poured from the bottle into a tulip.

A: Pours a really nice golden-brown with a thick white head that quickly settles. Leaves a small amount of nice lacing down the side of the glass.

S: A sweet tobacco smell backed with a slight hop back and dried fruits. A dark bread scent.

T: Definitely oaken as the wood taste is the first and last flavors on the tongue. Hops are present but really just compliment the sweetness of the malts.

M: Coats the mouth with the bitter wet hops, but leaves a nice dry acidic aftertaste. Very nice and not too heavy.

O: The sweet and bitter flavors play well together adding complexity to this brew. Obviously crafted with great care, this is a good brew to sip with friends, not your everyday chugger. 8/10 would drink again.

Picked up a single from Total Wine at the end of August for $3.99. Can't determine the bottling date from the cryptic numbers on the bottom of the bottle.

Beer poured amber orange with an OK white head that is leaving some lacing behind.

Nose is classic barleywine, sweet malts, raisins, and dark fruit predominate.

Taste is malt forward, raisins and vanilla dominate. Decent amount of hopping to keep this moderately sweet but malts win in the end.

Mouthfeel is superb, full and smooth and richly satisfying.

Overall this is a pretty solid barleywine...definitely give it a shot if you have the opportunity!

12 oz bottle poured into an IPA glass. Bottled on 9/03. Consumed on 9/28.

A - Reddish amber hue. Gentle pour yielded no head with light foam around edges of glass. Distinct lines of carbonation. Almost no lacing as liquid recedes.

S - Very fragrant. Hints of molasses, dried apricot, and peaches. Alcohol hints present.

T - Interesting complexity of flavors. Has a slight tartness composed of pineapple and kiwi. Has a sweetness composed of vanilla (oak aged), molasses, maple syrup, brown sugar and anise. Also, has a cinnamon pepper aspect and sweet alcohol notes. The alcohol is not hidden, but rather has a warming feel. Also, has a well balanced malt backbone.

M- Full bodied with luxurious foaming in the mouth. Tingly on tongue. Even after carbonation dissipates if drunk slowly, does not take on a syrupy texture.

O - In a blind taste test, I could tell this was a DFH product, but so much better that 60/75/90/120 Minute IPA's. This is a beer to drink slowly and savor. I held off trying this beer since I am more of a West Coast IPA fan and also have been lukewarm on other DFH products, but this is a must try.
