Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Todd on 12-08-2004

This oak-aged gentle giant has been gaining popularity over the past few years and is now available year-round.

For Burton Baton, we brew two "threads," or batches, of beer: an English-style old ale and an imperial IPA.

After fementating the beers separately in our stainless tanks, they're transferred and blended together in one of our large oak tanks. Burton Baton sits on the wood for about a month.

When enjoying the Burton Baton, you'll find an awesome blend of the citrus notes from Northwestern hops melding with woody, vanilla notes from the oak. The wood also tends to mellow the 10% ABV of Burton, so tread cautiously!

The appearance is a light amber with a touch of haze and a light tan head that doesn't stay on the glass. Carbonated perfectly. The aroma has an almost sour presence with citrus notes behind it and woody overtones. The taste starts with a strong Warrior hop punch right out of the gate, moving to an oaky bitterness in the middle when the malt depth and prune notes surface. It finishes citrusy with a bit of lingering, drawling mouth feel. You certainly get the English Ale yeast throughout the experience providing a somewhat sweet foundation to the taste. Surprisingly drinkable for a 10%er. Another nice "Big Beer" from DFH.

A-a hazy amber with a big creamy white head. Head has solid retention and leaves lacing on the DFH goblet.

S-subtle. A mixture of the 90-minute IPAs big hop presence (citrus, floral) and some oak from the barrel-aged portion

T- follows right in line with the aroma, but with the addition of the caramel malt backbone that supports the whole structure

M- silky smooth. A slight bite from the hops on the tip of the tongue

O-This is a big flavor and easy drinking oak-aged IPA. The oak doesn't overwhelm as it can in many others, but adds a nice subtle flavor. This big ABV beer hides it exceedingly well.

A: thick caramel with a brilliant white head that dissipated rather quickly.

S: sweet vanilla and oak immediately followed by classic dogfish Head IPA. Some sweet tropical aromas and a caramel base. Enticing!

T: picks up where the aroma left off. A dominate vanilla bean followed by a pleasant layer of caramelized grapefruit. A middle mouth that is slightly floral with hints of pine and underlying oak. Boozy. A full citrus finish that is quite dry.

M: a medium to full mouth feel with decent hang time on the finish.

O: just a great beer. The alcohol is definitely present but the oak gives it a wonderful complexity. /92

I bought a four pack of this, spending 16 dollars. Now, I am by no means cheap, but thats a lot so I expect a lot- like I should see jesus or something.

The appearance was a glistening reddish gold, smelled of sweet and sour, followed by a complex variety of flavors ranging from cherries, malts, green apple, and slight hops. For an imperial IPA I was hoping for more distinct hopiness, which this beer does not have. Though the alcohol content is high, its a very smooth drink.

Overall an exceptional beer in many ways, but I didn't see jesus. Probably not something I will get again.
