American Double / Imperial IPA |  10.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
This oak-aged gentle giant has been gaining popularity over the past few years and is now available year-round.

For Burton Baton, we brew two "threads," or batches, of beer: an English-style old ale and an imperial IPA.

After fementating the beers separately in our stainless tanks, they're transferred and blended together in one of our large oak tanks. Burton Baton sits on the wood for about a month.

When enjoying the Burton Baton, you'll find an awesome blend of the citrus notes from Northwestern hops melding with woody, vanilla notes from the oak. The wood also tends to mellow the 10% ABV of Burton, so tread cautiously!

Dark garnet pour, pulpy, and nearly opaque. Pours a thin, <1 finger head that quickly dissipates to a thin, bubbly rim. Lovely thin but complete lacing.

Warm, delicate nose of tannins, flowers, oak, vanilla, and hints of tobacco and mint. You can tell it's a hoppy brew, but there are no major traditional hop aromas that jump out at you.

Flavor comes across as a mix between 90 and 120 minute: malty, slightly boozy, and with a dry yet flowery hoppiness that manifests as a quality vice distinct hop flavors. The oak barrel makes a noticeable appearance with a strong oak backbone. Malts are well represented yet extremely well balanced and not overpowering; hint of caramel, with some grains and oats.

Not a thick mouthfeel, but still a sipping beer. No alcohol or carbonation sting. Thick clingy hop oil residue, and a beautiful palate-cleansing astringency.

This is a very complex brew that is extremely tasty. There's an absolute ton going on, and every sip might reveal something new. 90 min is well-represented by the strength of flavor and the impeccable balance, but the time spent in French oak adds a lovely special little something.

For a 10% ABV beer, this is an easy-sipping, fantastic beer. Some DFH odd-balls are worth a try; this is worth buying regularly.
