Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
This oak-aged gentle giant has been gaining popularity over the past few years and is now available year-round.

For Burton Baton, we brew two "threads," or batches, of beer: an English-style old ale and an imperial IPA.

After fementating the beers separately in our stainless tanks, they're transferred and blended together in one of our large oak tanks. Burton Baton sits on the wood for about a month.

When enjoying the Burton Baton, you'll find an awesome blend of the citrus notes from Northwestern hops melding with woody, vanilla notes from the oak. The wood also tends to mellow the 10% ABV of Burton, so tread cautiously!

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a New Belgium snifter. Bottled on 11/12/12, so almost 10 mos old.

A - Clear dark burnt orange. Off-white head leaves decent lacing.

S - Booze, dates, figs, oak, a little catpiss. Not a lot of hop aroma going on.

T - Although the booze was upfront on the aroma, it is really mellow in the taste. Again, figs, dates, vanilla, oak. Only a little bitterness on backend, which dries the beer out to prevent it from being too sweet. You can taste the booze on the finish also. Reminds me of Bigfoot a lot. If you like Bigfoot, you would definitely like this.

M - A little light for this ABV. Mouthfeel is the light side of medium, with a watery finish. Medium carbonation.

O - A really good beer. I had it fresh a couple of years ago and seem to really liked more than I am liking it today, but again that was a year ago. I am missing the hop presence in it. I will have to get a fresh bottle now to compare.

Consumed fresh:

Awesome large fluffy white head with a kick of yellow tint. Head lingers nicely too. Brew is fantastic clear amber color with deep browns.

Aroma is full of vanilla, pine, apricots, raisins, malty, sticky.

Heavy viscosity, sticky, deep, expeditious variety of flavor, biting, nicely bitter with rounded sweetness. Pine, apricot, grape, oak, vanilla, flavors all back up the aroma. Carbonation is medium placed and elegant.

A super solid brew from DFH, it's one of my favorites now that I've discovered it... I can't wait to see where this one goes with some age. I will continue to purchase DFH four packs, not so much the bombers... Highly recommended.

A: Amber-ruby hue. Pours a 1 finger, bubbly darkish-white head. Slight amounts of rising effervescence. Settles to a thick beer ring, and a smattering of bubbles on the surface. Solid spiderweb lacing.

S: Pine, plenty of honey, orange citrus, apricot, and lavender.

T: Lots o' pine hop, oak barrel, and fresh flora.

M: Syrupy and thick. Very liquory. Floral nature infiltrates the nasal cavity as you consume, and pretty much lingers there throughout. Bitter, biting, dry finish. High alcohol, apparent.

D: Sip and savor. The character will dictate it.

Atmosphere is great. Amber hue, nice bubbly head, and persistent lacing. Nose is a complex concoction of resiny hops, with sweet, fruit, and floral components. Hops, wood, and plant material. Hoppy, syrupy, liquory, and a little sweet. Overall, this is an excellent quaff.

Poured this imperial IPA from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. The IIPA poured a orange amber color, produced an average white head, left a nice amount of lacing on the glass. above average retention. The aroma consisted of toasted malt and floral citrus fruit. Full bodied, smooth and creamy mouthfeel-There is a foundation of malted grain, herbal hop flavor, fresh fruit, citrus grapefruit and oak. Outstanding Imperial IPA another great offering from Dogfish Head

I've had this for a long, long time. My last vintage bottle of this, bottle 02/18/08. Yep, 2008 vintage!

A - Poured into my Duvel tulip a wonderful crystal clear mahogany hue with a quarter inch creamy light tan head that doesnt really fade. Light, creamy side lacing.

S - Aromas of sweet malts, caramel, vanilla, toffee, rich oak, light alcohol. A super faint yellow cake batter aroma.

T - Similar to the nose here. Tons of sweet malts, but not cloyingly so, flash of dark fruits, lots of rich caramel, vanilla, toffee, oak. The hops have completely faded away, not a trace of bitterness. Very, very tasty, and while the alcohol is hidden wonderfully this is a big time sipper.

M - Mouthfeel is quite smooth, lower carbonation, works great for what it is.

O - Overall, a delicious beer. Age has changed this in to something wonderful. Love it, wish I had more of it.

From tasting notes: My sample aged for 9 months so I expected more of the hoppy Imperial IPA flavors to have diminished, but there was still plenty of that hop pop. This was a very hefty malty brew with enough hops to keep everyone honest. This opaque and syrupy concoction was akin to an American Barleywine. There were flavors of caramel malt and fruity undertones with a hop bitterness that was signature Dogfish Head.
