American Double / Imperial IPA |  10.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
This oak-aged gentle giant has been gaining popularity over the past few years and is now available year-round.

For Burton Baton, we brew two "threads," or batches, of beer: an English-style old ale and an imperial IPA.

After fementating the beers separately in our stainless tanks, they're transferred and blended together in one of our large oak tanks. Burton Baton sits on the wood for about a month.

When enjoying the Burton Baton, you'll find an awesome blend of the citrus notes from Northwestern hops melding with woody, vanilla notes from the oak. The wood also tends to mellow the 10% ABV of Burton, so tread cautiously!

Pours a hazy, copper color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Slight retention and slight lacing. Smells of sweet malt, alcohol, yeast, hint of pale malt, hint of roasted malt, and slight caramel malt. Fits the style of an American Double / Imperial IPA. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, hops, slight alcohol, hint of pale malt, yeast, and a hint of roasted malt. Overall, decent appearance, good aroma, feel, body, and blend.

Great whiff of woody brown sugars on the pour. Very soft, subtle nose. Solid taste profile as the toasted malt with notes of caramel foundation is big enough to sit equally with the lemon-lime citrus hops. Hints of vanilla turn up on the tongue in the finish. ABV is very well-hidden.

Old ratings: 5, 4.25, 4.75, 4.25, 5 - rating from Sept, 2013, had to delete and re-add due to ratings changes.

Note: ratings on the 2012, which more resembles the beer I am used to having.

Just doing an aged-vs-new tasting (although it turns out the new isn't *that* new):

The old (sold as aged) is from Thanksgiving 2011, the new a year later (we bought the "new" about 3-4 months ago, both have been refrigerated since then, we just couldn't find the time to do the comparison tasting we wanted, so hopefully the time in-house didn't affect anything).

When we did Flying Dog tour, they gave us a side-by-side tasting of an aged beer (sorry do not recall which, it was of course, one of their higher-ABV brews), and it was interesting to taste the difference.

A: 2011 pours cloudier, maybe a little darker amber with a little more head retention, although the 2012 has better lacing.
S: There is a little more pungent nature to the 2012, little more malty notes in the 2012. The 2011 has a stronger nose overall, plum-like to me; the 2012 is less fruity.
T: 2012 has more hop bite and (shockingly) more like what I am used to getting in the bar. The 2011 is smoother with a little more alcohol tinge to it. I believe I like the 2012 better, because of its sharpness.
M: 2012 has the stronger feel on the mouth, with the hops giving a dry tug through the malt. The 2011 malt lingers, without the bite of the 2012.

O: I think I like the 2012 better, due to the "bite" of the hops having not been mellowed by aging. However, it is interesting to again note the differences in and aged beer from a "fresh" one.

This is one beer that has a near constant presence in my fridge. Slightly hoppy (although the 70 IBU is masked very well) and dangerously smooth. Traces of oak and vanilla blend with the hop and the 10% leaves a slight heat feeling at the end. Perhaps the best balanced beer I have ever had, I find its warmth pleasant and comforting in the fall and winter yet the drinkability translates to a beer that is fantastic for sipping in the warmer months. While it is a bit pricey I would not pass it over. Give this one a shot if you haven't yet - you will not be disappointed.
