Notes/Commercial Description:
For this beer, we use maple syrup from Red Brook Farm -- Sam's family farm in Western Massachusetts, peat-smoked barley, juniper berries and vanilla.

Immort is fermented with a blend of English and Belgian yeasts, then aged in the big oak tanks at the brewery.

The sweet and earthy flavors meld magnificently in the Immort Ale. But be warned, the ABV is 11%, so after one or two you may start feeling immortal (even though we promise you won't be).

A- Gorgeous looking beer: muddy brown, bubbly at first but tempers quickly. Good foamy head with lacing.

S- Malty with a hint of vanilla.

T-Smokey, oak-barrel taste with a slight hint of vanilla. Very complex tasting beer, which can seem a bit too intense, but there's no questioning this is a high quality beer. (out of bottle)

Previous review (off cask)...not so good: 3/3/3/3/2.5
At Mugs Ale House on Bedford Ave. in Brooklyn they had a tasting with a cask of this brew. To be honest, I wasn't in love with this brew. It had a rust/copper color and a very alcohol scent.

It's very acidic and bitter...kind of tastes like a sweet tart was dropped in it, or something. Unique taste but the flavor was just too intense.

A: hazy burgundy with a ton of speckled sediment in suspension... inch of khaki-colored suds rises then falls... keeps a solid band of foam around the outer edge of the glass

S: hit of vinous booze initially.... rich, fruity, sort of raspberry pastry topping aroma, highlighted around the edges by a faint smokiness and a dollop of dark caramel... an overtone of what seems like roasted barley kernels... any nuances from the wood are subtle, blended in.... overall, very nice aromas, just surprisingly subdued

T: a melange of different flavors vying for attention (big surprise, DFH!)... vinous booze up front, followed by a quick fly-by of charred wood sugars and berries, pushed through by a big fat wave of caramel (maple syrup?) mild brown sugar, actually a little maple, and raspberry syrup/brandy lingering in the aftertaste.... the peat is merely a part in the sum - doesn't really stand out... the vanilla decides to emerge long after the last sip... alcohol certainly quite well-tempered, cushioned by the residual fruity-sugary elements

M: prickly alcohol up front, but pretty smooth and clean after that... approaching medium-bodied... slight viscous roll on the finish... quiet hum of prickly heat on the tip of the tongue a few moments after the sip, mellow heat at the back of the throat

O: definitely a sipper... in a blind multiple choice test, I might just finger this as a DFH brew - has a certain something about it... almost tastes like an extra special version of their Raison D'Etre... perhaps a bit too much abv? - greatest dimension of flavor might be best at 8-9% instead... i dunno - it does get better with each sip, more subtleties unfold... perhaps this is best consumed at room temp, huh?

12 oz bottle was poured into a pint glass. Bottled 2013A.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a hazy amber brown with little clarity. Spotty lacing as the beer was drank.

Smell: Smokey barley, vanilla, juniper berries, a little booze, oak, and caramel.

Taste: Nice caramel and smokey malts, vanilla, warm alcohol, oak, juniper spice, raisins, yeasty spice, and a little bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium to full bodied, medium carbonation, and nice warm alcohol.

Overall: At first I wasn't crazy about the smoke, but it blended well together with everything else in the beer. Pretty solid for a high ABV beer too. I'll revisit this one again.

Been aging this beer for about a year, it was delicious on first taste but smoothed out nicely with a little age.

A- an opaque mahogany with hints of ruby red when the light hits it right. A light khakis head that dissipated after a few minutes

S-dark fruits, light hints of oak followed by a heavy peat finish.

T-incredibly smooth, bright figs and caramel flavors quickly give way to a heavy smoke flavor, the peat has taken over, in a very non aggressive way. Aftertaste is light peat and light oak, transitioning into dark fruits cacao and just a hint of booze to dry the tongue making you want more.

M-crisp and clean, this beer is very dry for an eleven percent brew, no cloying sweetness or alcohol sweetness, surprising for an eleven percent beer.

O-a delicious brew that aged very well. For those that don't enjoy the flavor of peat, this beer is not for you. For those who like a touch of smoke this is possibly the best peated beer I've had. None of the flavors overpower theother and the smooth interplay of the oak, vanilla, peat and maple syrup making this a delicious sipping beer.

Appearance - Pours nearly 2 fingers of light khaki-orange head, the body is a beautiful hazy burnt orange amber, very lively carb rising within, a thick half-finger cap that never goes away, and amazing lacing that coats the entire glass all the way to the bottom.

Smell - Vanilla, toffee, light warm oak, natural maple, which plays wonderfully with the vanilla, subtle ripe plums, and faint amaretto.

Taste - Wow, very big bold flavors here - starts with big ripe dark fruits and oak, smooth amaretto, natural dried vanilla bean, some grassy hop character, and then there is unsweetened maple and more dried oak. There is a slightly burnt dark toffee maltiness that carries all of these flavors brilliantly. I can't put this beer down... alcohol is extremely well hidden, but definitely warms long into the finish.

Mouthfeel - plus side of medium for sure, but not in a heavy mouthcoating way - flavors here are huge, and they explode and fill the mouth. Carb is lower side of medium and silky smooth, gently foaming across the tongue, no edges to speak of. This accentuates the flavors, which remain long into the finish. And that's a very good thing here.

Overall - Somehow there is a boldness and almost a "brightness" to these flavors - this is a very big beer, yet the flavors are assertive and bold without being heavy - this is really an amazing brew, very balanced and complex. You really need to try this - an unexpected combo of flavors that works so well - a must try.

2009 Immort Ale

Pours a mucky brown with ridiculous cloudiness and a collection of large off-white bubbles around the surface.

Malt oxidation, peat, maple, vanilla, cheap chocolate, oak barrel, and some meatiness. Very tempered. Nice.

Oh wow! This beer aged gracefully! Rich meaty malts with notes of raisin, date, maple, vanilla, and peat with a mellow oaky character that dries up in the finish. Outro has lots of caramel, toffee, and brandied fruit. Notes of chocolate, bosc pear, and whiskey with a touch of paper.

Alcohol is amazingly controlled. I taste what feels like a 7% beer. The body is still nice and full. A little bit sticky. Carbonation is low, but doesn't falter.

Excellent cellar choice. Much better than when fresh. It's amazing what five years has done to the flavor. Cheers!

Brown reddish color with a one finger thick head with medium retention and leaving some laces.
Malty aroma with smoked notes, peat, maple and oak.
Bold and unique flavor of smoked malt, peat, earthy hops, maple syrup, booze, minerals, nuts, Belgian yeast, oak and raisins. Knowing there is Juniper berries you can really feel it. Dry, bitter, smoked aftertaste.
Medium to full body with low carbonation. Considering it is 11% abv, it is quite well hidden. Sticky feeling.
Unique beer with a confusing taste. A bit overly sweet, but still interesting sipper worth trying.

Grabbed this for half price at Roast House cappy hour, what a deal. Outstanding looking beer with smell that was good, boozy. Excellent taste, did not taste overly strong and had a great flavor. Overall a very good beer, would get at cappy hour again.

A: Deep mahogany, slightly hazy, sand-colored head that quickly recedes. Some carbonation is visible. Label/box art is decidedly lame, what is that clamshell with an X on it, and what the heck does any of that have to do with the beer?

S: Unusual; smoky, cherries?, vanilla bean, some sweetness, earth. All over the board, not superficially appealing but certainly intriguing for the adventurous soul.

T: This is unique. Have to credit DfH on that. Primarily smoky on a good taste, metallic on a bad one. Alcohol can be detected on the breath out. Leather, plums, mineral notes, burnt wood (because why not throw that in, too?). Some sweetness as a familiar taste you can cling onto in this chaos of flavors. Every once in a while I feel like I can glimpse the promise of vanilla and oak that is stated on the label, but if it wasn't in print I would think it was a hallucination.

M: My mouth is so confused right now I can't even tell. Nothing offensive, nothing that stands out. I'll go middle of the road on this one.

O: For such an off-kilter, unique brew my straight 3.75 rating seems bland and doesn't tell the full story. On the plus side, this beer is unlike any other, and has some notes that would be highly appealing to a certain crowd (liking peat in your whiskey is a good start). On the bad side, there is not much to compel another immediate swig (again, whiskey sippers might feel at home). I could barely detect anything but smoke and alcohol, certainly not the luscious (from the label) beer I was expecting. Good as part of a flight, but hard to finish by oneself. Maybe pick it up?

Thanks to Wayne for this one, I'd tried it a long time ago but it was an old bottle that hadn't aged well. Bottled 1/27/14.

Russet reddish gold, bright clarity and suspended carbonation ever present. Drippy lace and good, lasting surface coverage.

Aroma is slightly sweet and yeasty, though somewhat closed. Toasted almonds, peated malt, and fig jam.

Rich and sticky, though fairly easy to sip. Roasty chicory, leather, dried plums, maple sap. Traces of oak and grape must, a mild bitterness lingers in the aftertaste. Full bodied with considerable alcohol content though not especially boozy and still relatively balanced. Overall this was pretty good, and seems to be widely available.

poured into a snifter straight out of the fridge. pours a beatutiful flame amber red. 1 finger of brownish white head. small particles can be seen floating around in the glaas when held up to light. the smell is awesome. oak vanilla sweet,sweet malts obvious at 11% abv. smokey peat notes with that sweet maple syrup whiff. sweet scotch ale maltiness followed by big oaky vanilla notes and peat smokeyness. full bodied mouth feel with just the right carbonation. overall i feel dogfish head has done it again! amazing beer! great take on a scotch type ale/ english strong ale...cheers!

A: Pours a dark mahogany with 3 fingers width of light tan head. Head has excellent retention and leaves a good amount of lacing.

S: Peat-y, caramel malt, an off aroma that I can only describe as somewhat like dirty feet, char.

T: Scotch-like peat, caramel malt, vanilla, wood, a bit of booze.

M/D: Full body, fairly smooth, carbonation on the lower end, ABV noticeable but well restrained, drinkability is average.

O: Interesting brew, I dont love it, but then again its heavy on the peat flavors which I am not a huge fan of. I had high expectations because for some reason I was expecting this to be similar to Palo Santo Maroon, which it is not. Not a bad beer, but not something I would probably buy again.

12oz bottle received in a trade from jbaker67. I always enjoy DFH’s labels and their choice in nicely textured paper. Smoked barley, Belgian yeast, maple syrup and fermented in oak tanks? Why not?! Poured into a Brasserie de Silly tulip at fridge temp.

Appearance: A pour straight down the middle produced two fingers of khaki head. Brown body with plenty of ruby highlights when held up to the light. Better head retention and lacing for a beer of this strength.

Smell: Sweet smoked malts, a bit of pine bark, some of the maple syrup and a dry, toasted oak. The Belgian malts are there but hidden under the smoky peat.

Taste: Right up front you get some toasted oak, some of the maple syrup, pineyness, a wave of mild smoke followed and then a bit of the sweet Belgian malts. Rounded out with a warming heat and a toasted, smoky finish. A savory, maple syrup note lingered for quite a while. Quite a trip.

Mouthfeel: Full mouthfeel with a low carbonation. Warming, but not boozy at all. This one will sneak up on you.

Overall: While there is plenty going on here it doesn’t all work together to make a complete whole. The various adjuncts all make themselves known in a positive way, but they don’t really work together in making the beer better. While I don’t care for smoked beers the smoke notes in Immort were nuanced and enjoyable. Also the fermentation in oak tanks contributed some nice vanilla and toasted wood notes. Overall, a beer that should be tried at least once due to all the fun adjuncts. Good, but not great.

12 oz. bottle, with bottled on date 11/04/2013 printed on the bottleneck. A new beer to me from Dogfish Head. The premise sounds nice, and my expectations are fairly high.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.

A - Pours one finger of creamy soapy khaki head on top of a dark burnt sienna orange / ruby colored body with some dark sediment floating about. Looks pretty good, but nothing extraordinary.

S - Smell is pretty strange, and not what I expected at all. Overcooked grains, faint alcohol fumes, earthy woodiness from the oak, notes of sweet maple, faint notes of citrus, and a slight bit of leather / char / smoke. Not what I was expecting, and definitely strange, but it's okay.

T - Taste is kind of hot and sweet. Grainy malt, liquid smoke, caramel malt, faint hint of syrupy maple, earthy oak woodiness, vinous grape / cherry presence, and some alcohol heat. Sadly, I'm not really picking up on any vanilla.

M - Feel is smooth and creamy, with some sticky caramel / bready malt lingering on the palate with some smokiness. Medium bodied with ideal carbonation.

Overall, a strange beer, and not entirely what I was hoping for. The maple & the vanilla are no where near as pronounced as I had hoped. Alcohol is masked nicely, but it is still noticeable. I would be interested in seeing what some age would do to one of these bottles.

Pours a transparent dark orange / amber with with a thin off white head; terrific looking beer. Smell is juniper, maple, vanilla, smokey oak, and some yeasty funk. Quite a bit of boozey alcohol on the nose too. I got huge maple in the taste, but it is not overly sweet. Vanilla, smoke and a hit of black pepper spice linger. Feel is actually pretty light-bodied considering the style and ABV. A touch syrupy maybe, but not bad. Moderate - light carbonation that amplifies the subtle spice. Overall another crazy unique beer from DFH and one that for me falls in the middle of the success spectrum. Good flavors, and it's nice to see maple as a major player. Only complaint is that it's a touch boozey (but I can't really complain for 11%)

Pours out a deep orange/ruby red with a slightly tanned head that doesn't gain much volume after going down the middle of the glass. Good retention and leaves some lace.

There is a smokiness to the beer which is not stated on the bottle which was surprising since it plays such a large role. Plenty of vanilla coming through with hints of wood. Sweet maple and caramel.

Smooth and big sticky body. Smoky and syrupy sweet. There is some alcohol warmth but for being two weeks old this bad boy is drinking well.

Interesting beer and I wouldn't expect anything less from Dogfish.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a dark brown color with decent (not spectacular) clarity. The head is about three fingers high, cream shaded. Its retention is really fantastic, and the texture isn't half bad either. It leaves behind some nice lacing on the glass, too.

S: PHE. NO. LIC. One can definitely tell that this is a peaty brew. Let it warm up a bit, though, and its sweet malt backbone develops nicely. In particular, it brings caramel, brown sugar, and maple sugar notes. Vanilla is slight but definitely evident. I'm having trouble picking up the oaky tones, though; that or its blending itself with the peat to create a ham-like smokiness. Nonetheless, this nose is telling me a lot - but there's one thing it isn't telling me. Alcohol. This is a shockingly un-boozy nose.

T: Like expected, phenolic peat notes hit the palate immediately. This sensation tends to melt away around the mid-taste, being replaced by flavors of caramel and brown sugar. There's some slight vanilla in the finish; just like in the aroma, it's pretty subtle. Some faint tobacco qualities are peppered throughout. Once this warms up, its boozy qualities pretty much evaporate. My only real problem is this: take away the peaty notes, and this one is...kind of mundane. It only really develops complexity after many, many sips - and by that time, there's practically none left in the glass.

M: It's not exactly chewy, but it does have a decent body. While the sweetness has a negative effect on the general balance of the flavors, it does a great job of hiding the alcohol. There is absolutely nothing here to suggest it's 11%.

O: Okay, I'm really impressed with its lack of booze - and how the supposed peat isn't really that bothersome to my palate. This has some elements of a nice scotch whisky. Having said that, it's not quite as deep as I like my big, boozy monsters to be. Still, this has great aging potential, even with its currently well hidden alcohol.

A- a deep ruddy-tinted amber hue. Clear with a very short-lived white head.

S- predominantly smokey with some caramel malt sweetness

T- very similar to the aroma. There is a big smokey bite up front and a caramel sweetness in the background. The smoke tends to dominate the whole show initially, but mellows out as the beer goes on, making an interesting blend of the sweet caramel and vanilla and the smokey.

M- Not to thick or thin. A slight oily feel to it (probably from the smoke), but not bad at all.

O- while not really my cup of tea, this is another well made beer from DFH. The smoke almost overwhelmed it for me, but it does back off a bit and if you liked smoked beers, this is probably right up your alley.

From a bottle cellared a few years (bottle dated 3/23/2010), I figure now is as ripe a time as any for this.

Poured into a DFH pint, and this is a hazy, cloudy cola color (ruby brown) with an off-white thin head. Very lively looking. Some lacing apparent.

Smell was immediate upon the pour: Vanilla right away, smoke, then going in closer some oak, oaky maple syrup, some burn.

This is a smooth, creamy complexity. Vanilla notes, toasted barley, syrupy stickiness. Earthy and mighty tasty. More dark fruit comes through in taste, raisin. I recall trying this only once before and I believe it was from the 4-pack from which this bottle was aged. I recall not caring for it fresh. That's not the case here. This ale seems, in a sense, to be a cross between this brewer's 75 and 120 minutes, and Burton Baton: I say this because with Immort Ale you have maple, oak barrels and sweet high-strength, with the latter being very well-hidden.

There's medium to lower carbonation and a medium, syrupy mouthfeel, with burnt maple oak barrel aftertaste. Sticky. I decided to try this aged one now as I recently picked up a single bottle of this year's Immort Ale. I'll be aging that for a few years as well, and recommend you do the same.

Poured into a snifter color is a deep ruby roughly 17 SRM by estimation. 2 fingers of thick off white foam.

The Nose is comprised of a sweet honey, resin, oak and slight caramel. At first it smelled funky with a strong bleu cheese odor but after a few minutes it settled into a more complex aroma.

First sip was surprising has some huge character slight burn going down which reminds you that this beer is a humble 11%. I rated taste a 3.75 mainly because of the strong alcohol flavor that slightly overpowers the other complexities of this brew. Get some slight bitterness of front the hops definitely don't want feel left out and some spiciness . As it sits you get hints of toffee, alcohol, molasses, vanilla, and some woodyness. This beer is full bodied with a huge malt profile and the carbonation cant quite make an appearance.

Overall solid beer definitely a niche beer something I would have if I was craving something crazy. Definitely take your time to appreciate this beer its worth sipping over the course of an hour or two otherwise the alcohol with kick you in the face. Cheers!

Appearance - kind of a hazy reddish/mahogany color that cleared as the beer warmed. Almost no head, but what little there was had decent cling to it.

Smell - bready/malty, a hint of maple, strong suggestion of vanilla, sweet, very faint on the alcohol. Fruity - raisins/dates.

Taste - get a good hit of alcohol that is very warming, but there is definite oaky smokiness in the background, maple sweetness, then significant malt character. I find the opposite here in that the smoke.oak character was subtle and not intense at all. The maple sweetness was more dominant. Some vanilla present, and dark fruit that was date like. The maple became more prominent as the beer warmed. Somewhat earthy.

Mouthfeel - a very slight intrusion of the alcohol up front and on the back of the taste that was not unpleasant. Felt the alcohol was quite well incorporated, actually. Sweet stickiness with enough carbonation to prevent it from coating, but far from lively in terms of carbonation. Heavy bodied but not to the point of being "chewy".

Overall - enjoyed this quite a bit. It is a good beer to experience as it warms - the character changes noticeably from refrigerator to room temperature. Not a beer to drink quickly IMHO, but one to linger with and sip slowly. Felt it had more maple character than many beers claiming maple as a key flavor. One to have on hand for a chilly evening. Did not have fresh, so can't compare but I don't think the age hurt this beer at all and it would hold up well for even longer than the year I had it stored.

Bottle ( bottled 11/4/13) to DFH signature glass . 1/2 in off white head, left some good lacing. Color is a dark brown mahogony.

Aroma - toasted oak, vanilla, bready

Taste - oak up front, malty sweetness, vanilla, maple, some dark fruit, a bit of booze and smoke in the finish

Mouthfeel - Medium carb, on the heavier side of medium body. Coats the mouth/throat a bit

Overall - a very enjoyable strong ale for sipping. I am enjoying it more as it warms up. Maybe next time I will let it sit out of the fridge for 15-20 minutes before opening. Going to cellar 2 of them to see how they turn out in a year or two.

2013 vintage
A: pours a deep mahogany with a 1/2 finger head that lingers around for an extended period. Low clarity and visible carbonation.

Smell: strong oak upfront with a maple blend in it. Yeast and very slight bourbon sweetness. Not as solid as I. Was hoping more but left the other three to age and looking forward to see how holds with time.

Taste: big smokey oak taste at the front with a slight alcohol sweetness involved. Syrup and maple play a minor role in the flavor. Drinks smooth for the alcohol level.

Mouthfeel: Medium heavy mouth with little carbonation which was surprising from the visible carbonation.

Overall: At 16 bucks for four I see this beer as more of an investment for future years. I drank one and felt it was good but hoping next and future years will grow to great. Nevertheless a strong oak, syrup flavor that is a solid beer on its own and worth a buy

A - Pours brown with a thin head

S - Sweet caramel, with dried fruit soaked in booze.

T- Has a warm alcohol taste on the back end, which flows through the rest of the mouth. As I take another sip, that flavor is joined by sweet syrup, dried fruit, trail mix, and oak flavors. Kind of reminds me of a toned down 120 minute.

M - thin, syrup

O- sweet and oak-ey with a bit of an alcohol flavor in the aftertaste, which warms the mouth

Supposed to be 2006 vintage. Shout out to the guy at Granite Liquors that gifted this to me last year.

A – Pours a lovely dark amber with a thin off-white head that disappeared almost immediately. Sticky lacing on the tulip.

S – Aside from the dark fruit one would expect from the style, the maple syrup aroma is out of control (in a good way). Sweet, malty, brown bread aromas, too.

T – Very, very sweet maple flavor up front. Some barrel is present, but it’s subdued. As it warms, the smoky, peaty flavors come forward, as do the vanilla and herb notes. Well hidden alcohol.

M –Carbonation is low but in line with what one would expect from a vintage old ale. Very thick, syrupy, coats the palate.

O – A tad too treacle-y for me, but enjoyable. Reminded me of a J.W. Lees amped up to the ridiculous.
