90 minute IPA pours a light amber with some sunny edges with a huge tan merengue foam. A nice piney hop aroma with barley in the background. This has a very deep hop taste counter balanced by a thick barley base. This is balanced with a tip of the scales in the barley direction. The hops start to permeate a sweet flavor after a little while with the bitterness finishing well. A generous barley coating paints the tongue throughout.
I'm really torn on this one. On one hand, the taste of this one is fantastic. It is enjoyable to drink with nice complexities and balance. On the other, I was expecting a DIPA. After the wonderful hops of the 60 I thought this would be a bolder version. Such is the problem with assumptions and perhaps this is my fault. Unfortunately, I really see this one as a lighter barley wine due to the huge barley taste and feel. I have to say I feel a little let down because of my expectations. But then again, DFH has made their reputations on turning expectations on their head.
This really is a good beer, I just wasn't in the mood for a light Barleywine. Knowing that now I can be ready if I ever want another one. Ultimately though it's supposed to be a DIPA and I just didn't get that from this beer so have to review accordingly.
I still don't think this is much of a DIPA but it is still a very drinkable beer with great balance. I would add it has a bit of pepper and citrus as well. It has a bit of a musty aroma and I would bet this beer can change with a bit of time but without a date, who knows? I need to try it fresh.
