Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice. Bottled on 11/27/13.
Appearance: Pours a bright and fairly clear copper amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About two fingers of white head that slowly settle into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing around the glass.
Smell: A big and fairly ripe hoppy aroma that is very balanced by the bready malts. Upfront scent of earthy and floral hops with lots of hints of wet grass and some pine. Citrus presence is subtle with some hints of orange peel, lemon, pineapple, and slight grapefruit. Big malt balance with hints of biscuit, grains, sweet caramel, toffee, and cracker. Also some subtle hints of candied sugar and dark fruit. A very earthy and pretty nice aroma.
Taste: Like the aroma, although a little more stronger with the oily hop presence. Big taste of hops upfront with earthy and floral notes of wet grass and pine resin. Citrus hop notes of orange peel, pineapple, grapefruit, and lemon zest. Hops have a nice biting but not overwhelming bitterness. Big malt presence with bready notes of biscuit, grains, caramel, toffee, yeast, and cracker. Slight undertones of dark fruit and candy sugar. A very solid taste.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very chewy and earthy with a drying finish. Alcohol heat is subtle.
Overall: A really solid take on a Imperial IPA. Much different than the typical West Coast style. The hops are backed by a big malt presence. Balanced but still bold.
