American Double / Imperial IPA |  9.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Esquire Magazine calls our 90 Minute IPA "perhaps the best IPA in America." An imperial IPA best savored from a snifter, 90 Minute has a great malt backbone that stands up to the extreme hopping rate.

90 Minute IPA was the first beer we continuously hopped, allowing for a pungent -- but not crushing -- hop flavor.

12oz. bottle poured into pint glass—waiting on my IPA glass to arrive in the mail...

A: A hazy copper/deep amber hue. Two-and-a-half finger Dover White (for all you painters out there) head sits majestically atop the brew, taking its sweet ole' time to deflate. The head doesn't deflate much, finally settles down at about cool 1 inch in stature. Glorious lacing left everywhere the head once touched. Head kinda dies in the last half of the glass, unfortunately, but the lacing left behind is too impressive to truly deduct points.

S: Kind of like dipping your nose directly into the barrel of fresh hops. Grapefruit citrus, light scents of freshly fallen pine needles. The overall citric profile rests upon a light caramel malt backbone. The nose here is intricate, lively, and one of the freshest aromas I've ever had the privilege to sniff.

T: Floral and piney hops are the front runner in the flavor, followed by a balancing rush of caramel malt, nice and toasted around the edges. Finishes with another fantastic tidal wave of hop bitterness. The aftertaste is of toasted malts, light bitterness, and a pinch of spice from the alcohol.

M: Full-bodied, borderline huge. Thick and malty and as smooth as glass. Lightly creamy texture, good carbonation. Lots of warming properties from the alcohol.

O: In a world full of DIPAs, DFH 90 Minute sits amongst royalty. I've had this brew before in restaurants and I recall enjoying it, but this is my first experience with it in the comfort of my own home where I can bask in its absolute complex perfection. I don't usually toss around statements like that, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a single flaw in this brew. Stupendous, and one of my top 5 brews for sure.

I'm not a fan of IPAs and I've tried a lot of them, but this one is great. The balance is perfect it's not overly hoppy. Dogfish head hit a home run with this one and I think everyone should try it at least once it's well worth the money. It also doesn't leave that horrible bitter taste in your mouth when your done drinking it that most IPAs do.

Appearance: Poured from a bottle into a snifter. About a finger of white, foamy head. A copper color, not very transparent. A lot of little bubbles floating up to the top. Nice lacing around the glass.

Smell: Smells wonderful! Some nice citrus, hop, malt, not overpowering with the hops. I really love the smell of this.

Taste: Awesome! There's a little bit of sweetness to it. Tastes incredibly balanced between the malt and hops. Citrus, specifically orange.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with some carbonation, easy drinking imperial IPA.

Overall: My first IPA to review and immediately one of my new favorites!

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Bottled on 5/30/14. Tasted on 7/28/14

Appearance: Half-inch soapy head, nearly pure-white. The color is a transparent, golden-copper. Lacing initially holds a very nice level of retention, but fades fairly quickly. Still have some lace lingering towards the top of the glass after a long drink-down, though.

Smell: Sweet hop aroma followed by some caramel maltiness and hints of alcohol.

Taste: Hops hit you from the onset and stay with you until the end. It's a puckering bitterness. Alcohol warms your throat and nose towards the end. After taste is much more fruity than I would have expected.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth but thick with moderate to low carbonation. Dries the mouth.

Overall: A very solid Imperial IPA that I would recommend to any hop-head. Not particularly my favorite flavor profile for an Imperial IPA, however, I can still appreciated the quality. Would like to try on-tap, would buy a four-pack if I could share some with friends or family. I would give it 90-93 overall.
