American Double / Imperial IPA |  9.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Esquire Magazine calls our 90 Minute IPA "perhaps the best IPA in America." An imperial IPA best savored from a snifter, 90 Minute has a great malt backbone that stands up to the extreme hopping rate.

90 Minute IPA was the first beer we continuously hopped, allowing for a pungent -- but not crushing -- hop flavor.

I drank my first Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA back in March of 2010 in Miami, Florida and it was awesome. It hits the taste buds with that strong imperial IPA taste and the 9.0% alcohol (ABV) gives it that hard edge and wakes you up (or puts you to sleep if you drink too many). It pours darkish, with a reddish amber tint, finger sized tan head, and some carbonation. The main taste is bitter, with hoppy, caramel, fruity, and sweet. It finishes dry and leaves fruit like aftertaste. It is very filling. This is an awesome beer.

Appearance is a copper-deep orange color I guess you can say with a thick white head.

Smell is orange citrus, pine, a bit of sweetness and other hints of sweet fruit

Taste is great malts, hops, pine, and some sweet fruit. Very very good.

Mouthfeel is great!

Overall, this is one great brew! I always enjoy drinking this.

I'm not sure if I had a "bad" batch of this on tap, but it was not at all what I was expecting. Poured in a snifter, nice copper color with 1 finger head and good retention. Smell was moderately hoppy with a good bit of tropical sweetness.
The taste was what got me. I'm slowly warming up to hop-forward beers, and I really enjoy 60 minute. I assumed this would be a bolder, hoppier version, and boy was I wrong. It was by far the sweetest IPA/DIPA I've ever had, and that's not a bad thing, I'm just not sure if it's normally supposed to taste like this. Huge malt backbone, lots of tropical notes, with very little hop bitterness. If you put this in front of me and told me it was a pale/amber ale I completely would have believed it. Definitely did not seem like a DIPA. Alcohol was imperceptible. I don't remember thinking it was cloyingly sweet, but I'd imagine others might think so. My girlfriend even liked it, and she hates hoppy beers.

Very interesting DIPA. I'm not sure if this is what it's supposed to taste like, but I'm looking forward to trying it again. Maybe from a bottle next time.

Extremely hoppy, but very well balanced which makes for an enjoyable beer for someone who tends to favor a lower IBU.
My first thought that came to mind was "in your face assertive" but in a very good way!
Definitely worth a try and I'm looking forward to tasting Dogfish's other IPA's.

Once again DogFish Head hits us up with a fantastic beer been enjoying the 60 minute and the 120 as well as sampled the 75....
Great beer and already tapped my second keg on my 4 tap kegerator....
Great imperial IPA, delicious and hop bittered, I have it up against a Sixpoint Resin and it is neck and neck, complete hops profile difference and great to have both actually.

I had Dogfish head while visiting friends in northern Virginia. He suggested we start our night at a Dogfish restaurant. I was extremely satisfied and would highly suggest trying this one! I did not do an in-depth review because I tried it over a month ago.

I tested it the first time in Washington, where I could fetch a sixpack.

It has a intense hop aroma. It has the typical grassy dryhop aroma.

The body is very balanced between the bitternes and the malt. This is done almost perfect.

A very good introduction to IPAs.

Woah, what a full mouth experience! The first smell might send you away thinking it might be too bitter, but give it a chance! This beer is very fresh tasting, kind of piney, but it actually goes down very smoothly. It absolutely has my respect even if it is not my favorite beer. This is one IPA I actually think I may enjoy better out of a bottle than on tap to cool it's upfront bitter taste, though give it a chance because it is definitely a quality drink (if you can't tell already based on the fact that its from DFH Brewery)

A) nice, beautiful.
S) Wow! The hops. I love the hop smell, but thought it would be a little on the too much side.
T) you just feel the hops smack you across the face. I gave a friend some and he said "it tastes like the pellets you add when brewing).

The beer is just wonderful. It is a handful of taste as far as hops concerns. I thought that the bitterness would be a tad higher.

Pint glass on tap. It should be noted the pub was a little smelly with fried foods and god knows what else, which may have affected the nose adversely.

Appearance - Light amber, 1.5 finger head recedes to whispy cap, streaky lacing.

Smell - Big citrusy nose, caramely...at this point the stinky pub smell is interfering with more feint qualities.

Taste/MF - Mellow carbonation with medium/heavy body, very smooth. Tasting tangerines, grapefruit, apple, slight white wine, orange, light caremel malt presence. Hops are dominating in the best, juiciest way possible. Finish is semi-sweet with just a breath of alcohol (well hidden considering the ABV). Subtle lingering hoppy bitterness balances out things nicely.

Overall - The best DIPA I've had so far. This beer was smooth and juicy with a subtle sweetness, without being too cloying/syrupy. Immensely enjoyable and something I will most likely go back to in the bottle at my house (without any stinky bar smell to interfere).

Had on draft at dfh in RB.

A-light orange color with a light beige head.

S-lots of hops and floral and a hint of honey.

T-taste slightly sweet, hoppy, great balance.

M-no bitter finish has a great malt backbone.

This a great east coast IIPA that is well balanced and taste that you want more of.

this was served as part of a tasting flight at Whole Foods in a 4 oz. tasting glass...

tonight, I am compaing it with some other IPA's on tap at Whole Foods: Four Peaks Hop Knot IPA, Ballast Point Sculpin IPA, Mother Road Lost Highway Black IPA. I will also pour a Stone IPA from a bottle before the evening is over...

color and appearance are a medium honey yellow with a head that settles down to a thin lacey cap

smell is nice: floral with hints of citrus and pine

taste is very balanced, malt and hops do not overwhelm each other, but complement and result in a very pleasant mouthfeel... extremely easy to drink with a delightful aftertaste

In my search for the perfect IPA, this one is definitely in the top 5... Right now, I consider this the standard that other IIPA's are measured against

A. Rich gold, slight dark.

S. Smell is sweet, mocha notes with hops balancing it out.

T. Taste is awesome. Hard to tell its on the stronger side. Nice hops and mocha combination wash over the palette smoothly.

M. Feel is great, slightly on the minimalist thick side. It's coats everything in your mouth and doesn't linger too long.

O. I really enjoy 90 minute by dogfish head. It's a great beer and is highly do commendable.

Had this outside during summer at Baltimore harbor.

Appearance: amber/caramel, no head, bubble rolling rising from the bottom

Smell: hard to ascertain over odor of harbor, but generally was hoppy

taste: Heavy with hops and caramel. Not subtle but hid the high ABV well.

Mouthfeel: thinner than I would have expected from such a strong beer, but was nice to sip and savor

Overall: solid, strong IPA, that was smooth and went too quickly. First drink of the night but easily could have overwhelmed food that did not have strong flavor.

Served on tap with solid lacing clinging to the glass. If you like your hops, you won't be disappointed with this. Both smell and taste feature pine, citrus, grapefruit, and floral notes/flavors. It's a bit spicy, the ABV is well concealed. The citrus seems to be a bit unbalanced, but the beer is still far more complex than I can appreciate. The mouthfeel is spot on, with medium thickness, just the right amount of dryness, and a dry but pleasant finish. While IPAs aren't my first choice, there's a lot to love about this one.

Great Beer. Have had on many occasions, always on tap. Good body. Dark in color. Hoppy bite. Not a tremendous head. Clean lacing. IMO one of the best IPA's out there. Always a favorite, and a strong starter. Hard to find in 4 packs in my area. One of my top ten.

Poured in draft into snifter.

A: Dark golden color with nice fluffy white head that leaves nice lacing behind.

S: Lots of hops and earthiness mixed with light sweet malts.

T: Pine and citrus flavors from the hops balanced nicely with the richness and sweetness from the malts. This is my kind of IPA. More going on here than just hop bomb.

M: Nice body and good carbonation. Refreshing to drink...

O: Fantasic beer. Makes me reconsider drinking IPA more often.

Dogfish 90 min IPA is a great beer has been for a long time. I was amazed at how well balanced it is. The smell is very hoppy and awesome, however the taste is balanced with big malt flavor. Even at 9% abv it is very drinkable and has a nice finish that wants you to go back for more. If you are afraid of IPAs and hops try this beer it will change your mind and taste.

On tap at the The Loft on the LMU Campus
a- golden, no head
s- a little malty and a little hoppy
t- cool sparky taste thats bubbly and sharp. Very hoppy and bitter but only lasts a second, which makes it half cool. Disguises the alcohol fairly well and minimal lingering bitterness.
m- its got a hard alcohol feel to it. Not very smooth.
o- Ultimately, no floral/ piny/ citrus notes. Which is the only reason why I hunt for IPAs. Not bad if you want a heavy alcohol beer with limited aftertaste.

Served on tap at the Ginger Man in South Norwalk CT.

Pours amber colored. Some foam rings around. Lighter on top. Can see through. Very faint smell, tough to pick up much. Hops if anything. All hop bitter taste - hard and long lasting. Some balance, but struggles to hold it. Juicy at first. Not sure this is better than the 60.

Draft at my favorite taphouse: Fishale.

A: deep copper, hazy, darker than a lot of IPAs. Creamy offwhite head.

S: spicy hops and caramel malt.

T: In my experience, DIPAs either lean toward a citrus fruit or caramel flavor spectrum. This one is a great (perhaps the best) example of the latter. Yes there are hops, but I feel like the malt character of this beer steals the show. It's sweet, rich caramel and fresh baked biscuits all day long. The hops dart playfully in and out but are never rude or overbearing. The alcohol only shows up as the faintest tingle in the throat. It doesn't get much better than this.

M: Creamy and satisfying, but light enough to drink with a meal.

O: One of my all time favorites. A masterpiece that I never get tired of drinking.

"Perhaps the best IPA in America."

That is a very bold statement, yet it seems a case for Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA can easily be made. The brew pours a dark copper color, and is clear, with a creamy white head topping it off. Grapefruit
and other citrus aromas burst from the glass and are met with some piney notes as well as caramel and toffee. Malty sweetness greets the pallet, with hints of brown sugar and caramel leading the way before citrus and piney hop flavors superbly balance things out. Amazingly balanced, this brew is moderately carbonated and medium in body. Perhaps....

On tap at the Dogfish Head Restaurant BB on randle. The randle gives this an unfair advantage on this tasting. None-the-less this is a quality beer. Color is a deep brown with nice head and good lacing. Cascade hops in the randle - exteremely floral. Sweet taste - caramel, molasses, floral hops. This a great beer.

Not much that needs to be said about this one. I found this one to be remarkably smooth for an IIPA. The deep golden body and frothy white head look nice and the fruity, hoppy blast deliver as an IIPA should, but it's that silky smooth sip that makes this one extra nice. You're never going to pucker despite the high IBU. Great beer!

Orangish-copper in appearance with little head but some nice lacing anyway. There is a distinct fresh hop nose. This offering has a slightly sweet malt flavor upfront followed by a blast of hop bitterness that lingers long into the finish. This is a spectacular beer - the perfect combination of malt and strong hop flavors. My personal #1 DIPA - the only question is: do I like the bottled or on-tap version best.
