Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

An ale brewed with a ridiculous amount of pureed raspberries (over a ton of 'em!). Fort has a Belgian-style base, then we follow a similar fermentation process to the one we use on our other super-high ABV beers, 120 Minute IPA and World Wide Stout.

49 IBU
ABV varies from 15-18%.

Poured to an oversized wine glass. 2011 vintage.
Pours on the redish side of orange, a vigorous pour pulled a one finger head that was gone in a hurry. Nice spotty lacing.
nose is big and boozy, I get burnt sugar raspberries and tropical fruit. Big alcohol burn dominates the nose.
The raspberries is up front in the taste but is still overshadowed by the high alcohol, aside from that I get burnt sugar and toffee reminiscent of a barleywine.
Mouthfeel is super sticky, big body, and medium-low carbonation.
This is my third time trying this beer. The first time was in my second month of craft beer and I thought it had gone bad and poured it down the drain, the second time it was four years old and fucking delicious, this time it was fresh and I have to say this is a beer that needs aging to meet its full potential. At 4 years I'd give it a 4.7.

Poured into a snifter glass at a Dogfish Head dinner at Rapture. From notes. Reviewed 16 January 2012.

A: Almost a finger of nice head fades quickly. The beer is reddish, translucent/cloudy, and pretty.

S: Whoah! Balsamic vinegar and fruity, cherry cough syrup. Sticky.

T: Uh...It's quite sweet. And still reminiscent of cough syrup. But in the taste a tartness -- raspberry -- prevails. Utterly sweet with no bittering balance, but at 16% what did you expect?

M: Strong and dry, but with a decent carbonation amidst the cloyingness.

O: Too sweet (and strong) for my blood, but perhaps worth the experience.

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into an enlarged snifter. This was bottled in 2011.

Appearance: Pours a deep, raspberry red/maroon and gives an off-white head that fades almost immediately to nothing. Pretty opaque and raspberry colored.

Smell: Big, sweet raspberry syrup, molasses, malts, bourbon, vanilla, hint of alcohol. Big smell, but not overwhelming. Pleasant.

Taste: Sweet raspberry syrup, molasses, caramel, malts, a bit of spike, hint of tart raspberry. Like big candied raspberry malts. Big flavor. Alcohol is masked well - this is very drinkable, maybe the 3 years since bottling has something to do with that.

Mouth-feel: Low to medium carbonation with a medium syrupy body. Finishes with just a bit of booze.

Overall: Like sweet raspberry syrup this is quite sweet, but enjoyable. The alcohol is masked well, yet gives it some character. I drank the whole bottle and enjoyed it. Lots of flavor though, with a nice variety of influences.

1 Year old bottle poured into a snifter glass

A: Deep orange-brown amber color. Two finger head pour, small head lingers around the rim. Less raspberry color than expected for such a very berry-based ale.

S: Booze and raspberry, but mostly booze. Alcohol content is obviously very strong, but does not create a terrible imbalance. Sweetness and berry flavor nicely compliment the high abv profile

T:Warming abv with tons of raspberry and sweetness, but in a way that keeps true to Dogfish head style. This is not your convenience-store-mainstream microbrew-raspberry ale. Very satisfying, lingering after taste.

M: Nice slick mouth coating of sweet, but boozy raspberry. To repeat myself, balance is surprising for such a strong berry flavor and alcohol content.

O: Better than I expected. 87/100 on the BA scale in my opinion. After aging this for a year I let me expectations fall to an over fruity thick wine as opposed to a raspberry ale. I would certainly buy this again if Dogfish head brewed it. America Strong ale with a nice berry profile (albeit from a man with plenty of berries in his diet).
