Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

An ale brewed with a ridiculous amount of pureed raspberries (over a ton of 'em!). Fort has a Belgian-style base, then we follow a similar fermentation process to the one we use on our other super-high ABV beers, 120 Minute IPA and World Wide Stout.

49 IBU
ABV varies from 15-18%.

Poured from a 25.6 oz bottle into a snifter

A: A pink-orange color with a light tan head of one finger. The head fades fairly quickly, leaving mild lacing.

S: The smell consists strongly of tart raspberries. There is a small bit of malt as well. As it warms, a slight vinous character comes through.

T: The taste is more balanced than the smell. The raspberry sweetness is complemented by a moderate malt flavor. The beer comes very close to being cloyingly sweet but manages to just avoid that thanks to the tartness of the berries and the high alcohol content. As the beer warms, there are notes of caramel and toffee.

M: Fairly thin thanks to the high alcohol content and a little sticky due to the sweetness. Carbonation is mild.

O: An interesting brew. When I started drinking it, it reminded me distinctly of cherry cough syrup, but thankfully as it warmed, that flavor went away. The resulting raspberry flavor is unique and well executed.

A hazy dull orange colored beer with bright pink highlights that give it an overall pink hue. One and a half finger white head that dissapates fairly quickly down to a very thin sheet. Small spots of lacing. The aroma is vinous, smelling like a white wine with a bit more of a raspberry zest than you would find in a wine. The raspberries are softly sweet and tart smelling. There is a substantial alcohol whiff that lets you know its there without overpowering too much. A touch of bread fills out the aroma profile.

A big fruity sipper this one is. The raspberries come out kicking, more so than in the aroma, with a pleasant sweetness at first followed by a nice little touch of tartness. Not overly sour like raspberries can be, but it certainly has the sweetness that comes with them. That touch of bread from the aroma makes its way here too as an almost forgotten backbone to the beer. The reason it is almost forgotten is the big alcohol feel throughout. It is definitely a huge part of the profile to this beer as it prickles the palate in a bristly way. But just like some other high octane Dogfish beers, the alcohol isn't cloying and, although it may be a bit over the top, it isn't bad. It lingers in the aftertaste and then the breath for a good long while, but it is offset by the pleasant sweetness of the raspberries. Key word here is pleasant and not cloying. This had the potential to be very cloying, as it is at least 18% ABV and very fruity, but manages to stay dry and clean, not turning the stomach. The grit from the alcohol and the slight tartness gives it a bone-dry, vinous finish with just a bit of a syrupy residue leftover.

Really a good beer. A little too much in the ABV? Maybe. Unbalanced? Probably. But its still damn good. The raspberry flavoring is just spot on and counteracts the boozy taste superbly. But be careful because this beer will put you on your butt. Definitely one to share.

A bit of white foam on the head. Pink-amber body.

Alcohol nose, with a bit of raspberry.

Raspberry malt liquor, quite alcoholic. I'd get one to lay down to wear down the alcohol off. It works, and it works well. It's intense, but balanced enough, and the literal ton of raspberries in the brew aren't overwhelming.

Smooth feel, pretty nice.

Well, my take is to let this one lay down for a while. It's nice, but not worth the price fresh. I'd prefer Founder's Blushing Monk over this, though it's a similar price point.

Pours a clear amber color with minimal head and no lacing

Smells like alcohol and medicinal raspberries. Slight grain scents come out as it warms, but it smells very medicinal.

Tastes of grain and raspberries. No progression except alcohol really comes out on the finish.

Mouthfeel is pretty thin considering the alcohol.

Overall, this is not good at all. It is overly medicinal and just not good to drink...thank god I'm sharing this bottle

2008 Vintage

Split 4 ways, poured into a claret.

Appearance-A vibrant goldish color. Very hazy, can't see a damn thing through it. Little head, an off white one. You can just see the sticky beer clinging to the glass when swirling it.

Smell-Aroma was amazing. Just sweet ripe raspberries. It's boozy, but nothing like WWS or 120, and I was expecting a boozy mess. Only other aroma I get is a honey like sweetness, but boy this smells inviting.

Taste-Oustanding. Just can't believe how much this beer worked. Just a crazy amount of fresh raspberries in every sip. Upfront and towards the finish, and it didn't get old. Finish was on the dryer side that made me want to keep sipping. You can really feel the alcohol running through your veins, but not so much when consuming it. I drank this at about 45 degrees i'd guess, and when it warmed the booze definitely came out more, but so did a little more complexity. Sweet honey and a good amount of caramel and toffee notes came out too. Just oustanding all the way around.

Mouthfeel-Creamy, nice carbonation. Big mouthfeel, thick and chewy.

Overall-What else can I say. I really had to find the time to drink this. Obviously your not going to drink this all to yourself, although I probably could throughout a course of a day after trying it, and loving it. I honestly was expecting a sloppy mess even w/ the 3 years of age but it was just oustanding. Shocked by all the negative reviews on this one, I want more, and I'm already working on it. Amazing.
