February 2010 vintage.
Pours a really really dark copper, it allows light in around the edges.
The smell is complex, made up of fresh peanuts, some red wine and maybe a grapefruit. Kind of reminds me of adding a coat of lacquer to some wood. Oh, and there is some caramel. May as well be a wino in a wood-shop with a sweet tooth.
Hardly tastes like the 2009 vintage at all. I have had 2009 several times from the point when that vintage was 2 years old up until last month, and it was far sweeter and better. This 2010 is much darker and earthy. The malt character is much closer to what you would get from other imperial stouts. There is some tartness, this mixed with the earthy malt creates a taste similar to a cold tea without sugar. Basically, take a Dragon stout and mix it with a dry red wine, then toss in 3 coffee beans.
It feels mildly tannic, like a grape skin. And there is a dry tingle on the tongue.
I really like the 2009's so much better and will be sitting on the rest of my 2010's for several years....as well as my 2009's and my one 2002, that one gets opened this October.
