Poured a midnight black with a fine, cocoa colored head. The head fades quickly, leaving silky lacings along the sides of the glass.
At 18%, there is quite a bit of alcohol in the nose. This is tempered by a strong presence of sweet, chocolate malt and barley. There is also a bit of doughy yeast present, along with oak, vanilla and a subtle array of dark fruit esters.
There is a pleasant, non-cloying sweetness that persists from start to finish. This is a nice compliment to the warming, alcohol taste. Sweet malt, roasted barley, chocolate, molasses, burnt sugar, vanilla, oak, caramel and just a bit of bitter coffee mingle with sweet, raisin esters making this one unforgettably, complex brew. The dark fruit flavors lend a sort of Belgian quality to this fine stout. The aftertaste possesses a little tartness, along with some spicy alcohol.
To call this brew full bodied would be a gross understatement. It is viscous, lightly syrupy with a creamy texture provided by light/moderate carbonation. The drinkability is only slightly hindered by the high alcohol content. This is a sipping beer to be sure.
Another fine, extreme offering from the folks at DFH!
