10/29/05 stenciled bottle.
The beer poured into the glass pitch black with a ruby highlight and a deep dark brown head that lasted but an instant and then only lingered with light wisps at the edges of the surface.
The aroma was strong chocolate and coffee with a definite and pronounced dark fruit character of raisins and prunes. Caramel was present and a sweet malty character was notable, but as the beer warmed the alcohol began to burn the nasal passages with a rubbing alcohol character.
The flavor was dark and luscious with a strong chocolate and coffee character enhanced by a super strong malt backbone. The dark fruits, raisins and prunes, were very strong and added a definite complexity to the mix. The flavor contained a sizable amount of alcohol in with the fruits, caramel, chocolate and coffee.
The finish was heading toward dry with lasting impressions of dark fruits, malts and roasted grains along with alcohol long into the aftertaste and beyond. The body was full, but felt less due to a very low carbonation level and the strong presence of alcohol. The alcohol warming after consumption was extremely high. Don't toy with this one, tread lightly. The all too strong presence of alcohol is what kept this one from being truly world class.
12 ounce bottle.
