I have had this excellant stout several times at the Dogfish Head Pub in Falls Church, twice this year, and many times in the past, and it gets better each time. Also had a bottle that I kept for two years. Kept very well
The color is a rich looking black. very little head that I noticed
Primary smells included roasted coffee, maybe a dark chocolate
Taste is a tad sweet, malty too.
Very chewy, and rich body, one gets a sense of the high alcohol.
The Beer is very smooth, like a fine Port.
Jan 2012 tasting...This batch was disappointing, I found the beer to be unbalanced and a little harsh ...as if the malt flavor was reduced and the bitterness was prominant.... I reduced my ratings to average the eras
New Tasting- 12-31-2012 I just had a glass from the 2009 Vintage (Sam's Reserve) at the Dogfish New Year's Eve party. It was like seeing an old friend again after many years. The balance I noticed in my first few tastings was back, the hop's bitterness had mellowed. Also the malt sweetness had more of a chocolate taste then I remembered. I look foward to future batches with great expectations.
New Tasting Dec 27 2013...Just tried the new batch, and it was great. This batch is as good or better than the one I first reviewed. And even on tap it was as mellow and even a little sweet as I remembered the vintage bottle to taste. I went ahead and purchased a few bottles to lay down for the future too...

2011 vintage poured into a snifter
A- very dark with a porous tan 1/2 inch head
S- near perfect- chocolate, molasses, dark fruits dominate
T- taste matches the nose and so smooth...being a 2011 vintage definitely benefited the smoothness of this beer...still, this beer is nearly 20 percent and youd never guess...good achievement by DFH
M- thick and chewy...very very good, just what i like
O- i paid 15 dollars for this 3 year old vintage single bottle....should you pay that much for it? absolutely not...but IMO it is the best DFH beer brewed and one of the better stouts out there especially considering it isnt barrel aged and it is nearly 20 percent...quite an achievement!
