What a treat to find this on draft $6.25 8 oz pour Grey Lodge Pub lower NE Philly so let's have two. Highest compliment this can be mentioned in the same sentence as my beloved Bourbon County. Beautiful, looks, smells and tastes like the world class beer it is. Thick, rich chocolate fudge cake, very sweet molasses and dark fruits even a nice hop presence for balance. Alcohol is well hidden but you know this is an alcoholic beast. So smooth and very complex; so strongly flavored you would think this was barrel aged. Outstanding, this could easily score all 5's.

Bottled 2011-Poured into snifter

A-Jet black with toffee 1/2" head that quickly subsides. thick lacing that quickly runs down the side of the glass

S-Chocolate, roasted malts, anise, caramel, burnt coffee, bourbon The roasted chocolate and anise seem to be the dominant aromas.

T-bold flavors that explode upon the first sip. Warm alcohol burn that you get with a bourbon. The anise stands out with some roasty dark chocolates and coffee. Chocolate/coffee flavors linger during the finish. Some woody notes

M-Full bodied with some alcohol burn slightly more carbonation than you would expect with a stout of the magnitude...as the beer warms the carb and alcohol mellow slightly

O-great tasting brew that drinks like an Imp Stout with far less alcohol. Good flavor profile and the tastes blend well

Wow this pours a jet black color with a light almost non existant head,aroma is very sweet and alcoholic.The taste is very sweet up front with some nutty tones in the middle,very roasted finish.A marshmellow-like flavor also lingers with the alcohol showing thru as it warms.A one and done beer for sure.

Appearance – Black as night with a small but persistent tan head.

Smell – Aye, caramba! Yes, there’s some alcohol in this stout. Once you get past that there’s a lovely port fragrance complimented with pure, quality chocolate (it smells like a chocolate factory in San Francisco) and ripe, fresh dark fruits. The apricot and watermelon aroma is prominent along with black cherries and tobacco.

Taste – This is tremendous. The alcohol from the nose takes a back seat to the excellent flavors of this stout. The rich, aged port and dark malt flavors are a match made in heaven. This is mixed with unsweetened cranberries (have you ever tasted that?), big, huge, luscious cherries, pure Florida freshly-squeezed orange juice, a touch of pineapple and coconut, and best of all a peach/apricot combo that is out of this world.

I can’t go on enough, and this is the very first sip. After I’m plastered from the bottle I’m sure I’ll ramble. This is an amazing blend of all the flavors I’ve mentioned. The bready malt especially is mature and well-blended. This is a quality product.

Mouthfeel – No carbonation and fuller than full in the mouth. There’s really no alcohol sting in the mouth. This is a terrific mix of flavors that give the mouth a smooth, creamy and chewy texture.

Drinkability – No, you can’t drink a six-pack of this every night (although I’d like to). Be calm yet controlling. This is a masterpiece and it’s a shame that its brilliance will be lost in the myriad and continual references to its high ABV.

Comments – A big, “Muchas Gracias,” to my fellow BA JREITMAN for giving me a bottle of this tremendous Dogfish Head offering. BA Buddies are the best!

True black with a uber thing milk chocolate skim. Surprisingly vinous and Belgian like aroma of raisons, figs, plums, and prunes. Not much booze present in aroma at all. Very sugar loaded sweet taste but ABV is well concealed, too well…Very fruity, smooth, and deceivingly light. Alcohol warms mouth, throat, stomach, chest, and keeshkas. Perhaps the most warming beer I’ve tasted. Smooth flavors of vanilla, toasted malt, and bittersweet chocolate are persistent but mellow. Some wood and cream are present and along with a touch of syrup, but just a touch…far less than one would expect in a beer of this strength. Very impressive and dangerously drinkable. DFH deserves respect for this. Overall, however, flavors and aromas are not as interesting or complex as many other 2x stouts with far less of an ABV.

...hey, i just noticed. This is review # 500 for me. Not a bad beer for the occasion.

On tap at the Oak cafe. Pours jet black, virtually no light is allowed to pass through this sucker. Tan head made of fine bubbles, about a half-inch, settles somewhat quickly to a ring and leaves a tiny bit of lacing as it does down. This brew looks like a widow-maker, appearing heavy, thick, and robust.

A deep java aroma is the first thing to hit my nose; super deep espresso flavor with a nice helping of creamy, malty sweetness. Alcohol is noticeable in the aroma, not too surprising for an 18% ABV brew. Some chocolate and charred, roasted notes bring up the tail end. The first sip provides a warm, alcoholic bite. Again, to be expected from a beer with such a high ABV. However, I would never guess it was 18%... maybe more like 10 or 11%. The alcohol takes on a bourbon-whiskey type flavor. The backbone of the beer is woodsy; burnt, charred oak chips, vanilla hints, and a wine-like essence come crashing through. Ripe, dark figs, black berries, and slight anise provide a sweetness to battle the alcohol's warmth and it works quite well. Dark mocha cocoa powder shows up near the end, along with some light, peppery hops. The beer is all about the malt, though, and while it's relatively sweet, the warmth and robust power does a good balancing job in place of a huge hop bill. Body is medium-heavy, not quite as thick as expected, but not a bad thing. Smooth and not too sticky, either.

Surprisingly easy to drink for an 18% ABV beer. The alcohol isn't hidden - it's certainly there, and definitely powerful, but it never becomes a problem, and it goes hand in hand with the incredible malt concoction. Glad I finally got a chance to try this one.

Bottled 11/14/2008 poured into a snifter glass.

A: very dark brown with garnet highlights; the clarity seems decent enough but it's had to tell as you can only see through less than an inch. The slight medium brown head dissipates quickly to only a ring of mostly compact bubbles.

S: Alcohol and dark fruit dominates the aroma with notes like fermented plums with raisins and figs. The alcohol being soft with just a touch on the solventy side but. The malt has calmed over the years with only light notes of roastiness and coffee. No hop aroma detected. There is a slight earthy, umami note note as well.

T: It's like scotch blended with a stout, the roasty notes in it's youth seems to have faded leaving a lot of boozy with little support. The flavors match the nose with a dark fruit (raisins, plums and figs) and a hints of roasty malt and some coffee. There is a light malt sweetness and a moderate hops bitterness with the balance being on the bitter side. The medium-dry finish gives way a long lasting bitter and alcoholic finish.

M: Full bodied with moderately-light carbonation. There is a thickness to the body with a lig ht creaminess, very light astringency and a huge belly warming alcohol warmth.

O: I like liquor so the booze doesn't bother me one bit but after a few years of aging the alcohol has become the star player. I'll review a younger bottle soon because this was one of my all time favorites.

2008 vintage poured into a snifter. Black with ruby highlights and sports a tan head with good retention.

Intense, dark, milky chocolate in the initial aroma with light smoke, booze, black cherry, plum, and chocolate liqueur.

Slightly sweet, not over the top though. Dark rum flavors with a nice roasty fade. This is a beer to beer feared a little. Very nice, ages great.

My first review !

A: Black, black black , Head is a little sloppy and dies down quick

S: Cold Coffee, another touch of something i can't describe, plus a slightly burnt hint

T: Sweet, reminds me of good port, My taste buds start to get the hop feel, but are quickly turned over by the sweetness, but the aftertaste lets the hops e come back out. Alcohol is very prevalent, but welcoming.

M: The medium carbonation really sticks with the sweet taste and lingers in the back of my tongue. Can really feel this one going down, from smooth at the front of my mouth to slow and strong to the back.

D: I can't drink darks like this very quickly, but I have no problem taking a good swig and then just letting the aftertastes slowly dissipate. I'm having an urge for a piece of semisweet chocolate.

Won't likely drink this again just due to preference, but as a local and highly rated beer its a good start for my reviewing.

World wide stout 18% alcohol content. Lucky enough to find this one at a Broudy's store in Orange Park FL.

A- Pours a extremly dark black fluid that doesn't allow one ounce of light to penetrate it. Has very little head but does maintain a small tan ring around the glass. Leaves very mild lacing when at celler temperature... with a swirl or two.

S- Rich toasted malts, black coffee, smooth vanilla, and a massive dose of alcohol taint the nose. Quite inviting for such a complex beer.

T-M- Extreme malt and barley upfront with hints of sweet creme, coffee, vanilla, and raw alcohol this is very covered for the amount in it. Being mildly carbonated the mouthfeel is a rush of flavors and thick malts that are full bodied but linger for just the right amount of time not overdoing it. Great overall!

D- It's hard to believe that for such an alcoholic beer it is just so damn drinkable and a great delight to consume. If you are in the mood for a dark beer look no further...

On tap at Brixies in Brookfield IL

7oz. pour in what looks like a tiny juice glass. (Side note: This is my only gripe with Brixies. They serve a lot of their beers in snifters, but the real high alcohol beers they serve in an unflattering juice glass that does nothing to accentuate the beer)

It pours a dark rubyish brown with no head to speak of.

The nose has a huge amount of sweetness, vaguely medicinal similar to Robitussin is the only way I can describe it.

The taste has an overwhelming sweetness to it. Once again I'm getting cough medicine flavors and maybe cherry cough drop. Very overly noticeably boozy. Once I get past those harsher flavors I can pick up some deep caramel notes.

I liked the lower amount of carbonation of this one vs. the bottle form. The burning alcohol really hinders drinkability even for a beer with such high ABV.

This fresh version is night and day compared to the 5 year old version I had a few weeks ago. This keg should have been sat on for at least a year to mellow out. I would gladly drink the aged version again but would think twice about it fresh.

This is a review of a 6-year old bottle that I've been hanging on to... Bottled in 2004.

Semi-roasted nose, some sweetness, a bit of sour/tart character, and plenty of well-earned oxidation notes. Faintly lactic. Charcoal. Past-prime oranges rolled in oats and dark chocolate. I have to think that the recipe for this beer changed in 2005 or so as the 2004 and earlier vintages that I had (when fresh) tasted very different than what came after (less of the now characteristic Dogfish Head sweet-factor.) At this point, it's impossible to tell if it's the age on it or a different recipe, but there's very little booze on the nose, even though I'm pretty sure this was bottled around 18-20% ABV. Oh good Lord, the alcohol does, however, remain present on the palate. Wow. Very warming, and the heat from the alcohol is really just wonderful as this is making for a very rewarding digestif.

Chocolate notes are big. There's virtually no coffee, and far less sweetness than I remember in newer vintages or in this beer when it was young (the bottom of the bottle had no sedimentation, so I don't know if there was any bottle conditioning/fermentation burning through the residual sugars--didn't look like it--may just be the oxidation/age.) There's an unusual note, the product of age and/or oxidation, that can only be described as cherry flavored Chapstick.

Fades with alcohol warmth, some dark fruits (faint cherry juice, currants) and 70%+ cocoa dark chocolate and the typical oxidation character present in many of the world-class versions of old ale.

Drinking a 6-year old beer carries its risks--you never know how it's going to hold up and this beer, while very sturdy, wasn't necessarily designed to be consumed this long after bottling. But the beer holds up and has aged gracefully. A very rare treat indeed--and far more mellow than the fresh batches.

A: a very dark amber color with no head

S: Sweet, boozy, and a bit roasted. Seems to have some chocolate to it. Not an overpowering scent though.

T: I remember this beer (in fresh form) as being over the top chocolate sweetness. Well, it's still over the top and the chocolate still remains.. however the sweetness doesn't seem so deadly and a very strong cherry flavor has come out. It's not as boozy as expected either.

M: Doesn't burn too much and is relatively smooth. Body is a bit syrupy.

D: Not one you'd drink every night.

Overall, I've had this beer a few times and it still hits hard every time. It seems to cellar well but does become a slightly different beer by doing so. Either way I'd recommend WWS as a cheap way to experience a truly Big Stout.

2003 vintage. Older gold DFH cap without "Vim & Vigor" on the label if you're wondering how to tell what vintage you have! Pours from the 12oz longneck bottle like a slick, syrupy oil spill into my glass. I can coax a thin ring of dark tan foam to appear and at 18% I wasn't expecting much more. Intricate lacing emerges above the incredibly dark brew. Aromas begin with huge sweet roasted dark malt accentuated by rampant chocolate and coffee aromas. A deep vinous, port wine character with a touch of vanilla, plums and dark fruits. Robust and a tad burnt with wisps of alcohol. Simply freakin awesome.

First sip brings a veritable onslaught of rich, sweet roasty burnt maltiness and the minute it hits your tongue you know it's not fuckin around. A myriad of flavors invade the mouth including chocolate, ground coffee, vanilla and molasses. Midway through the sip the vinous, port wine-esque character appears with hints of plums and various dark fruits. Fairly sweet, but kept in check by a nice toasted bitterness on the way down and a slight note of hops. Alcohol lurks in with the finish and warms the throat on the way down. Personally, I find this to be an incredibly enjoyable sipper and a great massive stout.

Mouthfeel is big, thick and viscous...this brew nearly weighs down your tongue as you drink it. Rich and decadent with a mellow carbonation that suits it well. Truly an experience and one of the best high gravity brews I've yet to sample. Kick back, sip and enjoy this one over a few hours. Sublime. I can't believe I waited this long to try this, Dogfish Head continues to meet and surpass my expectations. Well worth the price and the hunt to find it.

2001 vintage: Vim and Vigor still on the label. This one was showing oxidation signs with lots of raisin and cocoa flavors throughout each sip. No noticeable alcohol bite and low carbonation. Body has thinned a little bit. Still tasty.

2002 vintage: Vim and Vigor crossed out with black marker. Hot and boozy upfront with good carbonation. Sweet dark malts. Dark vinous fruits abound with cocoa accents. Molasses in there too. Super flavorful and bold....aging beautifully.

2003 vintage: Smoother with rich dark malts and not as sweet. Cocoa cake, raisin and dark fruit. Cherry accents. Not as hot alcohol wise as the 2002. Drinking great right now.

(Will post further vintage review as I crack them....we only got through 3 years at a previous tasting...)
