I had this on tap at the Brickskeller in D.C. It had been aged in the barrel for three years!
6 oz. pour into a small, somewhat fluted glass. There was no head, but with an alcohol content probably in the 21-23% range, this wasn't surprising. Color is a very dark, deep brown, almost black, with a faint purple tinge.
With the small mouth on the odd choice of serving glass, I couldn't get a really good sniff, but there were tons of scents; dark fruit and a bit of alcohol the most prevalent.
The taste was absolutely phenomenal. Extremely extremely complex, with every second I held the beer in my mouth revealing more flavors. Plum and prune often arose, but there must have been at least 50 other flavors in there, including vanilla, oak, and perhaps some lighter fruits like strawberries. Unlike the regular World Wide, there is no alcoholic bite at the end, merely a long, lingering continuation of flavors that gently fades away.
The mouth feel was heavy, full, and silky. Somewhat viscous, but not nearly as much as some other stouts or barleywines I've had.
The beer was so rich that I can't quite give it a 5 (I savored the 6 oz. for about an hour), but every moment I was drinking the beer was a joy.
After my fellow beer aficionados and I had our first sip, we just looked up at each other and grinned like idiots. The World Wide Stout does not have strong flavors of chocolate or coffee as is generally expected of a stout, and should perhaps be in a category by itself. Non-aged World Wide is a great brew too, the alcohol just blocks more of the flavors.
This was, simply put, the best beer I've ever had.
