Super thin, nearly nonexistent head dissipates almost immediately. The beer is black as night. Pungent whiffs of licorice and molasses reach my nose before I even go in for a sniff. I go for a sip.... hmmm. Too cold. Well, I just took this out of the fridge so it definitely needs to warm up.
After a while it's really opened up. Damn. This is the strongest beer I've ever had. Alcohol seems very apparent. But of course that's not all that's going on here. Smell is a malt overload with hints of vanilla, prune and sourdough. Taste is absolutely intense. Maybe a little too much for me! Gorgeous full-bodied mouthfeel.
My first thought is that this might perhaps be a bit overrated. But then I again I just might not be ready for this level of intensity. Or probably the truth is it's a matter of taste. I think I like Stone's RIS, among others, a lot better. But this is still, obviously, an amazing brew worth checking out! And I've liked EVERY dfh offering I've tried.

2011 vintage poured into a snifter
A- very dark with a porous tan 1/2 inch head
S- near perfect- chocolate, molasses, dark fruits dominate
T- taste matches the nose and so smooth...being a 2011 vintage definitely benefited the smoothness of this beer...still, this beer is nearly 20 percent and youd never guess...good achievement by DFH
M- thick and chewy...very very good, just what i like
O- i paid 15 dollars for this 3 year old vintage single bottle....should you pay that much for it? absolutely not...but IMO it is the best DFH beer brewed and one of the better stouts out there especially considering it isnt barrel aged and it is nearly 20 percent...quite an achievement!
