12oz bottle opened on 1/19/2014, poured in snifters. Says beer was bottled on 12/11/13.
A - Very dark beer. Pours black, but when held to the light the rim is burnt umber and see through. Still very dark, black hole-like in the center even when held to the light. Minimal head, swirled too much in snifter to detect lacing patterns.
S - Lots of alcohol heat on the nose. Smells of rum soaked raisins and dates. I also get some dark chocolate. Smells like the Brix brand of dark chocolate. They are those bars that are supposed to be paired with specific wines they sell at coast plus.
T - Lots of burnt caramel roastiness (not a word, i know), cappuccino, and dark chocolate. A nice warming alcohol burn a few seconds after you swallow which is great for the "cold" we are having here in Oregon. I also get the taste of perfectly ripe and juicy wine grapes (like Syrah and Zinfandel) that have a ton of that sugary sweetness in them. Kind of random, but just reminds me of that.
M - This is perfection for me for mouthfeel. This is what i want all my big imperial and Russian imperial stouts to have. A little carbonation, but not so much that it takes away from all the flavor. Thicker than most stouts and not too syrupy either.
O - Well, to nobody's surprise, this beer is delicious. Thick and sweet while having a nice roasty and smoky backbone that keeps the sugar from overwhelming. Reminds me a little of a couple ice coffee drinks, but then with the warming finish of a high quality liquor at the end. Very good beer. I am going to cellar a couple for a few years and see how they develop as the alcohol calms down a bit, although i truly do enjoy that part of the beer in this fresher version.
