Bottled in 06, drunk in 07.
Well I finally get around to reviewing this interesting brew... I've had it a few times before but never taken extensive notes on it. As luck would have it, I got to try this the same night as a Dark Lord. That ain't going to happen again soon.
Worldwide perhaps should be called "midnight" as that's what springs to mind when pouring this utterly black beer. There's a spotty, uneven head comprised of various sized bubbles that fade quickly, leaving a deep oily looking stout in my goblet.
I put my nose to the glass and get a truckload of super sweet roasted malt. Smells syrupy, not unlike a pancake topping... lots of rich notes here, chocolate, burnt grains, honey, alcohol and carbon mostly. Not terribly complex, but very sweet.
My first thoughts on sipping this beer are always the same: This can't possibly be 18%. It's just a roasted malt bomb; just malt piled upon more malt. Roasted, slick, and did I mention sweet? Charred wood / sugar and cocoa and a deadening rich sweetness both start and finish this beer. A bit much, really, but certainly tasty. I still maintain it would be good on pancakes.
Worldwide is slick, creamy, and rich in the mouth, not unlike the aforementioned Dark Lord (but not as sticky, either). A definite sipper.
Worldwide is a good beer for what it is, and a fascinating experiment, but not very drinkable... more of a curiosity than anything else. The scarcity and price of this beer (around $10 for 12 ounces) relegate this to those rare moments when you want to impress your friends or get your enemies really, really drunk.
In any event, a tip of the hat to Dogfish for trying something wild. Buy some and lay it down for a while for best results.
