Verdi Verdi Good holds true to the Dortmunder style and gains a delightful green and a subtle organic aroma from the addition of spirulina. Spirulina is a blue green algae prized for its high nutritional protein content.

We brewed this beer once - turns out it wasn't at the top of our list of successes!

Served from a Fatheads growler into a chalice. The color is quite lime green, with a green/white head on it and a nice lingering bubbly head. The smell has a nice bready malty note to it. The taste has that same bready malt melded very nicely with the noble hop bite that shows up to say hello, but never becomes overwhelming...as far as I know, I don't really notice anything in the flavor from the spirilina, but I've never had it before, so I couldn't really say for sure. Mouthfeel, however, has the slightest bit of almost a sliminess from that algae, but otherwise is nice and solid. As for drinkability, this is fairly nice and I'd look forward to it again.

Yes, it's very cliche to drink a green beer for St. Patrick's Day, but leave it to DFH to put their own unique spin on something that was previously so overdone. The beer is certainly greener than any food coloring could ever make it, and that says enough. More importantly, the beer is quite enjoyable...a good little Dortmunder that stacks up quite nicely with Great Lakes' classic. I'm enjoying this, watching my Mountaineers (hopefully) win their tournament game, and hoping to have this one again.

on tap at the Collins bar in NYC, pours clear and GREEN, vibrantly green! The barkeep, tells me it was brewed with spirulina, light green head, green lacing, you get the picture...mildly grassy nose, doughy malts present and some crisp, noble hops present. Crisp and fairly snappy lager, dry and spicy finish. Nothing special, just a middle of the road lager IMHO

(Served in an American pint glass)

A- This beer came to me glowing bright green like lime jello with a pure white head that had a heavy green tint to it. The head faded pretty quickly and the crystal clear body with big fast bubbles was still intriguing.

S- The smell of light pale malt with a bitter noble hop hint was very light. As it warmed more of the sulfur note came through.

T- The taste was a crisp pale malt that was very clean followed by a noble sulfury hop bite in the finish. It had a hint of club soda to it with a faint woodruff note that was dry aswell.

M- This beer has a light crisp mouthfeel with a little fizz in the finish.

D- This beer is very dry and crisp and the finish bite was pretty strong. It really accented the qualities of an export lager, which are not my favorite. I'm glad I got to try this beer and it gets marks for creativity that is for sure.

On tap at the Grey Lodge the day after St. Patrick's Day. The obvious appeal here is the bright green huge that it beer poured. The color was brilliant but very clear. Interesting look. There was a bit of a greenish/off white head but it didn't last very long. The aroma was a bit of bread dough, a bit fruity and organic also. The taste was as described below, a pretty standard lager but it also had a bit of that DFH hop bit which was nice. Overall a very interesting beer and easy to drink once you get over the color. I brought home a growler to enjoy this interesting beer for a few more days. I hope it doesn't not discolor my growler.

Verdi Verdi Good is a one-off release from Dogfish Head. It is one of the first, if not the first, lager-style beer produced by DFH. Spirulina algae is added to the beer, giving it a solid green hue. Appearance: The lager is crystal clear, and GREEN! It comes with a nice firm head that does not last long. The green certainly seems like a turn-off, but it is not the standard St. Patty's day food coloring, this dye is natural.

Smell: The lager has a pleasant, well-balance smell to it. The malts are smooth and rounded and the hops are not over the top. The spirulina does give the aroma a somewhat funky, natural smell. The funk is just weird enough to be unusual, but it does not distract from the ale.

Taste: The beer has the taste of a nice Dortmunder lager, the malts are smooth and not overly sweet, while the hops are well-balanced overall in the ale.

Mouthfeel: The lager is well-rounded, smooth and very pleasant. The spirulina gives the beer a somewhat funky unusual taste, but stick with it.

Drinkability: Once one gets over the deep green color, the lager is quite good. I'd say it is one of DFH's true 'session' beers.

Appears a weird glowing green with a small white ehad that quickly fades into a tiny collar. Doesn't look appealing at all to me.
Smell is of lemon-lime jello(still in liquid form), or of those German hard candies that I used to get as a kid.
Taste is of the same aromas with nothing really jumping out at me.
Mouthfeel is strange...bitter grassiness and slickness that makes me want to stop drinking this asap.

This beer came a brilliant lime green with a thin mint green head.

Smelled of bread dough and a craft paste, or Elmer’s glue along with a decided garden vegetable organic smell, much like spinach. There was also a hint of sour over-ripe fruits.

Tasted surprisingly sweet like honey and cantaloupe. The lager malts added some paste, hazelnuts and corn bread. The finish of this beer was a dry earthy nip of hops that was effortlessly blended into the main body of the brew.

The mouth feel was light bodied with a light playful easy-going carbonation. Unfortunately, the sweetness added a little bit of stickiness.

Over all, this beer was way better than I anticipated. It’s light, easy to drink, and ideal for St. Patrick’s Day.

Enjoyed on tap at the Moan & Dove. Listed on the menu as Dogfish Head Gangreen, but the bartender mentioned the algae when asked, so this is most likely Verdi Verdi Good, with a different presentation name.

Presented in a Dogfish Head pint glass. A 1/2" light green head over the otherworldly bright green brew, with ample lacing. Aroma is slightly hoppy. Taste is moderately hoppy, with an overall kind of chemical bitter taste, and maybe some mint, although that's probably just psychological from the color. Mouthfeel and drinkability were both limited by that chemical-type flavor. Another interesting brew from DFH, just not one I'd revisit this time. Have to sadmit it's still probably one of the better green beers out there.

The latest DFH limited release beer. Available on draft only, and tapped just the other day at the DFH Alehouse. This beer uses the algae Spirulina, which gives it its natural, and distinct, green color.

A brilliant, flawless liquid emerald fills the glass, topped with a short dense head of fine mint green bubbles that look remarkably like a Shamrock shake from McD’s. The head disappeared, leaving only a few thin strands of lacing. The beer is crystal clear and there is not a carbonation stream or stray bubble to be found. The smell is clean and mildly of soft hops and biscuit malt, perhaps with just a hint of ocean mist and beach present as well. The taste is gently malty with an initial biscuit flavor. There is a bit of sea spray in the finish as well as a soft hop bite but not aggressive. Medium bodied, with a soft, creamy mouthfeel and only possessing minimal carbonation. This was definitely drinkable and fairly unique as well due to the color.

I didn’t see too many glasses of this on the tables around me, but I’m sure they will run through it in no time. If you feel the need to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with green beer, have a Verdi Verdi Good, go natural, and avoid the green tongue.

Well, it is certainly green. Actually that is probably the best part of this beer, the coloring. It poured and unreal clear green with a nice head that quickly dissipated. Unfortunately it went downhill from there.

The beer had little aroma to it, and what I could pick up was a less than pleasant funkiness. It got worse from there, the only way I can describe the taste is that it tasted like a beer with some algae in it. Which is what it is, but I was hoping for something a bit more tasty than this. I barely got through my 10oz serving and would not recommend this to anyone.

Considering the color it is quite the pretty beer. Really reminds me of the berliner-weisse I had 10 years or more ago in Berlin itself. Somewhat earthy and pungent aroma. Sulfury and "damp" smelling. Malty enough flavor. Mildly sweet. Nothing really stands out flavor wise. Average body. Rather ho hum and novelty like for me. I need to review it again from a mug where I am not influenced by the color. If DFH wants to do a lager I am fine with that-just not a gimmicky one.

Served in a pint glass. On tap at the Gaithersburg MD DFH pub.

Appearance is a bright emerald color. Crystal clear green. Almost comical in appearance. If it’s green beer you want it is green beer you get. Even the head is comprised of small to medium light green bubbles.

Aroma is very lightly hoppy. Lightly herbal and grass. Taste is also very mild. If you close your eyes, you would think you are drinking an average to good standard lager. Mouthfeel and carbonation are just right, flavors are well rounded and mild. Something you could drink as a session beer if you are not distracted by the color.

If Sam’s goal was to make an all natural green beer for St. Patrick’s day so people could drink a lot of green beer with a gimmick… I mean craft twist to it, than this is a success. As a regular offering, an average lager. They make too many other superior beers to drink/brew this one regularly. Maybe next St. Patrick’s day. Verdi Verdi Good? Verdi Verdi Boring.

Had to try it for the novelty. Served on-tap at Sunset Grill & Tap with my dinner on March 13. I had to close my eyes while drinking it otherwise I swear I was eating mint green jelly. Reviewing on the basis that this is meant and completely intended to be green...

Such a vivid green. Not merely stained green but it was intended to be green. It was green like a traffic light or a Grolsch bottle. Clean white head. Nose was just slightly more than non-existent and rather like wet paper.

Surprisingly tingly hops but not much in the way of bitterness. Malt base was very light too. Kind of like stale crackers. Crisp feeling but ultimately felt thin and watery. The damn green color was playing tricks with my mind and never really sure what flavors I was getting. Reviewing this beer as close to style but just cannot describe it as anything but a unique beer.

Got this beer on tap, 16oz pint at The Drafting Room on Exton, PA.3/22/06 It was really a rather dark but clear green and had a small green tinted white head (could have been reflection from the beer beneath) The organic smell that it is supposed to have was very subtle and hard to find. It had no hoppy smells that I could notice. The taste was light as I would expect from a lager of this type with a nice hop flavour (reminded me of czech saaz) which was quite light. Very drinkable. Indeed a very cool looking beer that did not taste bad at all which i would drink again in the future. Kudos to Dogfish for making a beer for the Irish holiday!

On tap at FireWaters in Hackensack on St.Patty's Day... let's see if it lives up to the hype.

Appearance- I've had spirulina in my Odwalla drinks before... and I like it. This pours a gorgeous crystal clear green, with a small rim of foam. Never tried a Dortmunder before, so I'll stop here.

Smell- Quite brisk and fresh. Hops are easy and light, with a "green" aroma... being an avid health-concious man, I recognize the natural character of the organic, seaweedy elements and love it.

Taste- Damn easy, and totally impressive. Balanced and light, I give this points for being super clean... with great taste in the front, middle, and back of the tongue. I wish that I could be more well versed in the style, because this is noteworthy!

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- Brisk, quick, and active... nice and extremely quaffable. Big thanks to DFH for a mid-March treat that really hit the spot after that corned beef and cabbage dinner.

I had this on St. Patrick's Day at the Grey Lodge in Philly.

Not much head but a beautiful, beautiful green from the algae and seaweed. I mean green. Clear. It seems to be standard green. Not so much a tint or shade, but straight up the middle. It is unusual and something to behold. I love it.

Description on the Dogfish website says the algae gives it an organic aroma. I think I perceived it, but I'm hoping it wasn't just a suggestion.

I hate to describe it as such, but the taste seems like a standard lager. Reminds me of Warsteiner.

I hate to say this, but I'm just fascinated by the color more than anything else.

Draft at Blue Dog Pub Pours a clear green, really green. People at the bar were looking at me funny. Has a good white head. The head lasts very well and produced great lacing. Had a mostly malty aroma. Had a good carbination. Had a light duration with an alright aftertaste. A very fun beer to drink on St Patricks day. The green is all natural not by food coloring.
