American Brown Ale |  12.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
An unfiltered, unfettered, unprecedented brown ale aged in handmade wooden brewing vessels. The caramel and vanilla complexity unique to this beer comes from the exotic Paraguayan Palo Santo wood from which these tanks were crafted. Palo Santo means "holy tree," and its wood has been used in South American wine-making communities.

Sampled from a 12 oz. brown glass bottle, very cold from the fridge in a standard pint glass.

A: Pours a rich dense brown beer color. Head was only slight and retention was minimal with only faint lacing. Typical of higher alcohol beers.

S: Smell was sweet, with vanilla and brown sugar notes on the nose. Smelled like an apricot sugar cookie.

T: Very pleasant. Nice hops balance to the sugar malts. Reminiscent of an American strong ale. Didn't get a lot of smokiness from the wood processing advertised on the bottle, but what I did get was a rich cherry flavor. Alcohol content wasn't noticeable until the last drop, then the warming kicked in.

M: Very pleasing beer to drink. Hops provided plenty of dried fruity flavor depth without much bitterness at all. Two of these and you're schnockered, so be respectful.

O: I'd consider this one to be the little brother of Worldwide Stout. It's a little more enjoyable than the stout to the average joe, as it's not as alcoholic and sweet, so it'll match better to a wider variety of occasions and meals.

Poured into a snifter. Bottle date January 2014.
A-black without any light shining through at all. Looks like an imperial stout.
S-booze, liquorice, raisin, ferment able sugars.
T-Carmel, dark fruit, raisin, licorice, overwhelming amount of alcohol and burn. Too much for my taste.
M- full bodied medium carbonation, lots of alcohol legs. One finger head that surprisingly sticks around.
O- very big beer. I have enjoyed world wide stout and 120, but this one is too big for me. The alcohol festers in the back of your throat and causes an overwhelming burn and bitterness. Not for me.

Dogfish Head Santo Marron has a thin, cream-colored head, a extremely dark-brown (essentially black) appearance, with noticeable, fierce bubbles streams at the side of the glass. There is a lacing sheen left behind. Aroma is super-sweet, full, syrupy, and of alcohol. Taste is of dark-roasted, very sweet, syrupy barley malt, a background wood note, subdued hop bitterness, and even molasses, I think. Mouthfeel is rather heavy, with an underlying chalkiness (which I perceive as a flaw). Dogfish Head Santo Marron finishes mostly wet and very boozy.
