Style | ABV
American Brown Ale |  12.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
An unfiltered, unfettered, unprecedented brown ale aged in handmade wooden brewing vessels. The caramel and vanilla complexity unique to this beer comes from the exotic Paraguayan Palo Santo wood from which these tanks were crafted. Palo Santo means "holy tree," and its wood has been used in South American wine-making communities.

Don't know what to make of this beer to tell you the truth,it's different that's for sure.they call it a brown ale but it pours black like a porter or stout, smells more of the same.in order to get any head you gotta pour this thing like a fountain,it laces nice but it's not a brown ale and that's what the label says it is.in the beginning it taste pretty good some vanilla and coco,a little sweet and very rich, once again it taste like a porter and not a brown ale.to be honest this beer begins to fringe on wine and not beer IMO.

All in all this one was like other dogfish brews not very good.wtf is up with these guys do they think their shit is like nectar of the gods or what,I mean all there beer is way overpriced and not that great.i have yet to have a world class beer from them yet.i won't be buying this again and maybe not any dogfish head period.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter.

A - Pours an opaque dark-brown, with a half-finger head of tiny tan bubbles. Mere dots of lacing.

S - Mild aroma of molasses, burnt sugar, wood, soy sauce, and vanilla. Honestly, expected a much stronger aroma.

T - Big, rich flavors of tree bark, raisin, vanilla, caramel, toffee, date, and fig. Hint of ash/smoke. Finishes with a lingering woodiness, that keeps this from becoming an overly sweet prune/toffee bomb. ABV has a noticeable bite from sip to swallow. Very complex.

M - Medium bodied, with medium-to-low carbonation. Medium body works well with the flavor profile, as anything more would probably push this into syrup territory.

O - Complex and rich. Has a few minor flaws; slightly to "hot", and not all the flavors come together in total harmony, but all in all a really solid offering.

Poured a 2014 version into my Stone tulip glass.

Appearance is black like many RIS. Good amount of head that dissipated slowly.
Smell a bit roasty and coffee that opened up as it warmed to more of a bourbon-y essence.

Taste was very roasty with a bitter finish. As the beer warmed, more complexity revealed itself and became coffee, char, bitter chocolate and wood.

Mouthfeel was medium to full with a good bit of carbonation.

Overall a worthy addition to my DFH samplings. Haven't tried many Brown Ales but this was good. Probably would not purchase multiples of this again. But I would buy the occasional single bottle as a variation to my usual stout selection.
