Notes/Commercial Description:
In Festina Peche, since the natural peach sugars are eaten by the yeast, the fruit complexity is woven into both the aroma and the taste of the beer so there is no need to doctor it with woodruff or raspberry syrup. Just open and enjoy!

12oz bottle to DFH Signature Glass

A: Light golden orange. Half finger white head. Some decent carbonation bubbles rushing to the top. Slightly translucent.

S: Slight tart smell, then a dominant aroma of fresh peaches.

T: Tart, with a strong coarseness like a sour. Peach comes in the tail of it, but is very subtle (Possibly faded as the bottle has sat?). Very simple brew.

M: Light bodied for sure, with good carbonation giving it a refreshing quality. Quaffable. Even the non-beer drinker in my house admitted she could have quite a few of these.

D: It's a poundable session beer, at a not-very-sessionable price. I could only imagine the peach is more pungent as it is super fresh. Simple beer, not bad at all.

"Festina Pêche is a neo-Berliner style Weisse fermented with peach juice. This unique, tart and refreshing brew is so down with the dog days of summer." Dogfish Head's Festina Pêche is a Berliner Weisse brewed with peach concentrate. I am comparing a freshly released Festina Pêche to verticals from the previous two years to see how the sourness and fruit characters evolve.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a pint glass. Served above 53º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a crisp foamy sunny white head over a pale straw yellow body with mild haze. Moderate subtle carbonation. Retention is average, lacing is light and spotty. 3.5

(Smell) Malt characters of fluffy pale unmalted wheat form a light body with a subtle sweetness. A strong essence of peach fuzz, not syrupy or thick enough to be concentrate, but rather squeezed juice with a distinct dry tartness and moderate acidity is in the foreground of this beer's aroma. Simple but light and pleasing aroma. Potency is high. 3.75

(Taste) Light wheat malt with a thin body and a dry, peach juice finish. The tartness of this beer is front and center, tartness is moderate. Very low to no hop presence is detectable, and the balance of soft wheat malt and peach acidity drives the flavor of this beer. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Texture is dry, acidic and tart. Carbonation is modest for a soft crispness. Body is medium for the style, light/medium overall. Balance is slightly sweet over tart. Alcohol presence is very low, off characters are minimal. 3.75

(Overall) A long time favorite of mine, the style itself a very drinkable and enjoyable treat. Nice peach juice flavor with a moderate tartness is just enough to keep from puckering and light enough to session a few with ease. 3.75

Vertical Reviews:

1 Year Aged: The head is slightly more crisp and fizzy as well as the body, which has cleared to virtually no haze. Carbonation is more abundant, varied and assertive. The aroma of wheat seems to have smoothed out, and hints of creeping raisin and maple syrup peek in this vintage, overshadowing the peach tartness somewhat. The flavor is cleaner and more syrupy than the fresh with a slightly amplified tartness, less peach flavor present than either vertical. A bit more aggressive on the carbonation, but pleasantly so. This vertical was of the 2013 Festina Pêche, particularly different in appearance and strikingly less peachy than the other two verticals.

2 Years Aged: The head on this vertical is slightly more creamy and frothy than the previous vintage, but with a haziness between fresh and the clarity of the 1 year aged beer. Retention for this beer is superior to both. This beer has an aromatic complexity that blends the curious maple syrup and juicy raisin from the 1 year better with the peach tartness, although the fresh batch is ultimately preferable. Perhaps the least enjoyable flavor of the three, the wheat malt and peach character has diminished to insignificance, and the flavor is a compound of musty thin cracker wheat beer with a soft tartness, much more than the other two ages. With time, the beer did not improve in flavor nor did the sourness increase. The older this beer gets, the less sharp and profiled the key flavors get. Don't let a bottle sit neglected for this long.

Recommended Vintage: Fresh (Do not age)

12 oz bottle poured into a weiss glass.
4.5% ABV, Bottled on 2014A

A - A fizzy, loose white head explodes upwards with a loud, soda-like noise before slowly deflating to a thin skim above the lightly hazy pale straw yellow beer.

S - Light lactic acid notes with a hint of sourness pair up with a sweet canned peach aroma while pale malts and a touch of soft wheat with a pin-prick of huskiness finish it out.

T - Wheat is favored in the flavor while a pinch of huskiness comes from the pale malts. Peach all but lost in translation, adding only a thimble-like splash of fruitiness into the lightly sour, nicely acidic flavor.

M - Light-bodied and fully carbonated, Festina is crisp and bright with an almost perfect level of lingering acidic finish on the tongue giving the brew a slight sour pucker with lingering dryness.

O - I'm a huge fan of peach beers done well and while Festina Peche isn't a knock-your-socks-off peach beer, the light peach nuance behind the classic tart acidity of a Berliner is an amazing combination. This beer is superbly drinkable, especially on a hot day.

Appearance: Poured with about half a finger of head which dissipated to the edges of the glass. The color is pale yellow with a cloudy body. Active carbonation is bright but just a tick low for the style.

Smell: Peaches and white grapes jump out on the front. Creamy, buttery malts showcase themselves on the body. There is an airy touch of ginger and spices on the back end. A touch of sour shows up but it is very subtle.

Taste: Sweet peaches hit first. Those peaches keep rolling into the body and take a darker turn, yielding some tartness. Some of the traditional berliner yeast and malt notes are felt on the back end with sprite fruits and dry grains but this is peach forward.

Mouthfeel: The peaches do well on the front, transitioning from sweet to tart. Fitting dryness on the back end pulls it together.

Overall: Well done brew by DFH here. The peaches certainly dominate but they really fit within the style. Nice malt and yeast notes pull the style through.
