Notes/Commercial Description:
Theobroma is a celebration of chocolate, the food of the gods.

This Ancient Ale is based on chemical analysis of pottery fragments found in Honduras that revealed the earliest known alcoholic chocolate drink used by early civilizations to toast special occasions.

The discovery of this beverage pushed back the earliest use of cocoa for human consumption more than 500 years to 1,200 B.C. As per the analysis, Dogfish Head's Theobroma (translated into "food of the gods") is brewed with Aztec cocoa powder and cocoa nibs (from our friends at Askinosie Chocolate), honey, chilies and annatto (fragrant tree seeds).

It's light in color, not what you expect from your typical chocolate beer (not that you'd be surpised that we'd do something unexpected with this beer!).

look: 3 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3

Pours a thin off-white head which dissipates quickly leaving no lacing. Strings of carbonation can be seen bubbling up through the cloudy amber hue. Yeast specks stay suspended at all heights of the liquid.

The smell is subtle. Cocoa is most noticeable. The malt aromas are sweat and toasty. Hops come through as lightly floral and perfumy.

The beer may be well balanced but to well balanced. Ingredients tend to blend into a good but all to subtle almost indistinguishable mixture which falls a little flat. What can be noticed are the malts being more prevalent than the hops, the toasty flavor overshadowing the cocoa. The ingredients listed on the bottle are not readily noticeable. Chile and annatto are present on the after taste but you'll miss it if you don't look for it. They can be noticed by first catching the bit of warmth they create towards the back of the throat.

Mouth feel has a medium body and is a bit chewy. Carbonation is also medium.

The bottle I purchased was a 1 pint 9.4oz bottle. I enjoyed the beer but I think this volume is enough for one encounter.

The beer was good but for the ingredients listed and the brewery it came from I expected more.
