Poured into a snifter on 7/9/09
Poured half the bottle - split with a fellow drinker
Bottled in 2009
A - Robust copper color. ½ in head dissipates quickly. Hardly any lacing & it doesn't last.
S - Notes of honey & a dry spiciness from the chilies. Interestingly enough, the nose was not as potent as I would expect.
T - The ancho chilies mostly show themselves with the finish. They offer a dry & lingering spiciness. The heat isn't particularly strong, but it does build on itself. Cocoa is certainly present, but it comes across as kind of tame. I also noticed hints of cinnamon; after investigation, I found that annatto can have a "nutmeg-like quality," which may account for this.
M - Light & crisp mouthfeel which struck me as odd given the ingredients & abv. Carbonation works nicely with the spices. There is an overall dryness that well suits the beer.
D - This is one of the most interesting beers I have had from DFH, if not in general. I could easily drink more. It is kind of expensive, but well worth the price of admission.

Served from an ice cold bottle into a glass. This is another Ancient Ale selection, love these, this one is from the Americas a chocolate food for the Gods.
Appearance: Golden, cloudy with slight carbonation, a half inch head with an aggressive pour.
Smell: I'm getting a citrus smell with some notes of honey.
Taste: I'm getting some coco some heat and sweet from honey.
Mouth feel: Thick not stout thick but thicker than the usual ale. Lots of floaters, ah hell thats the taste baby.
Overall: I would by this beer just to taste some history, plus its damn good so bonus. This beer is at 9%ABV so a nice choice for your nightly night cap, Cheers.
