served from bottle, poured into standard pint glass. did not pour extremely cold, but it was chilled. pours a rich golden color with a great white head (which dissipated relatively fast). halfway through, excellent lacing. smells of honey and woodland nights. tastes of grapefruit and warming caramel, with great support from the pine-y hop character. has a sweet end with almost some molasses. as far as dipa/iipa's go, Squall hides in the background. it doesn't pack that powerful hoppy punch, which i believe suits this beer well. meaning, the balance is well put. i enjoyed the hops up front, but i really enjoyed to additional flavors put into it. overall, excellent brew. i would definitely like to try it again, colder on a hotter day. cheers!

From my tasting notes: As a double IPA I was expecting a lot and this one delivered right off the bat. As a bottle conditioned IIPA it poured a nice hazy copper with a sharp fruity herbal aroma that you could smell as soon as I opened the bottle. It may be an IIPA, but this one was more in the realm of a Barley Wine with a thick syrupy mouthfeel and complex taste. The Squall had fat chewy hops with a good balance of biscuity malts that helped keep everything balanced. It was a very impressive beer.

2011 release reviewed 11/01/11

Squall is a chill-hazed amber color with lots of activity and a small, fluffy pillow of off-white head. Lacing is left in a mixture of spotting and lacing in decent volume. The beer is pretty bright, even with the haze.
The aromatics are very nice. There's a strong, complex and well-developed hops bouquet with lots of citrusy, leafy, floral, spicy and perfumey bitterness with good, strong balance from malts and a bit of sweetness. Citrus zest adds a bite to it. Caramel and toffee counter the bitterness while allowing it to rule.
The same big, complex notes are in the flavor, again well-balanced by caramel malts, with an additional light alcoholic heat and a little rawness, citrus bringing a little more juiciness as well as pith. This is a big, hoppy brew that shows off lots of flavor. The finish is a little dry and brings out some raw green stem, almost like young wood, which is actually nice with the caramel coming through and the leafy notes following it.
The feel is good but the bi-polar character of sweetness (just in terms of the mouthfeel) and dryness strobing is tough for the palate to catch up with. Otherwise it's really nice, crisp and creamy.
