A big thanks to Dan3279 for digging this one out of his personal stash for me.
Poured from a 750 mL. capped bottle (Bottled In 2011) into a snifter glass.
A strong pour yields a 2-finger mocha-colored head that slowly fades after a few minutes to a thin island and thin foam ring. The body is a near-black mahogany that shows no traces of color when held to light. Some light lacing can be seen clinging to the glass between sips but never lasts long.
The nose is strong and sharp, with an emphasis on dark, bitter chocolate. Notes of cacao, dark fruits, and licorice are accompanied by an overlying earthy quality. As this beer warms, an alcohol aroma separates itself from the dark fruit aromas.
A sharp sweetness stings the tongue at the beginning of each sip. As the beer is held in the mouth, light flavors of burnt coffee beans, dark and milk chocolate, and honey. As the beer is swallowed, flavors of caramel, licorice, and plum come out. These are soon met by a slight alcohol flavor that mingles well with the dark fruit flavors.
The medium to full body does a great job of transporting and delivering the flavors while remaining smooth and playful. Even though it is rather sticky, it is not coating at all. The carbonation is barely noticeable but does create a nice, slightly foamy swallow.
