Dirty Fermentini is the latest collaboration between Dogfish Head and BeerAdvocate founders Jason & Todd Alstrom. The theme of this beer is Extreme Session, so Sam and the Bros set out to create a unique brew at 5% ABV to prove that beer doesn't necessarily have to be high in alcohol to be considered Extreme. The result is a brew based on a Dirty Martini, utilizing olives as a funky and off-centered ingredient which, to our knowledge, has never been used in a beer before. Along with the olives, the botanicals used in our Small Batch Distilled Gin whole leaf cascade hops, juniper, black peppercorn, coriander, orange peel, lemon peel, and angelica root were all added to a blonde ale base which was then fermented dry with an ale yeast originating from a popular London brewery (as a nod to the popularity of Gin in the Mother Country). This one-of-a-kind ale is characterized by spicy juniper and floral pepper notes combined with a splash of citrus which then gives way to a rich earthiness contributed by the olives. Extreme ingredients and process, without a hit-you-over-the-head alcohol content, make this beer a fun pint to drink that won't leave you wondering where you left your keys the following morning. Cheers!

Appearance: clear yellowish orange in color with 1/2" head. Some lace stuck to the glass during the session.
Smell: floral, some earthy tones, and a hint of tartness hits the nose.
Taste: first you notice the big lemon zest flavor, followed by some grass and some tea-like flavors. Some soft peppery flavors arrive late. Bitterness is very mild here.
Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Crisp to start, less crisp and a bit dry at the finish. Aftertaste is short lived.
Overall: this was a very uniquely flavored beer that was a bit hard to deconstruct some of the flavors. I found myself savoring and analyzing this one quite a bit - it was good.

Had on tap at DFH in Rehoboth.
A: Pours a slighty hazy amber color with a slight peach tint to it with a small beige head. Moderate retention and spotty lacing.
S: Rather floral and fruity, some citrus fruit, a little lemon. Slightly grassy with some faint spices - pepper and a little coriander. Slight olive aroma right at the end.
T: Surprisingly fruity, expected it to be a lot more bitter from the olives, but they are much more of a supporting flavor than a main one. Orange and lemon with a little bit of grass.
M: Medium bodied, rather easy drinking with medium carbonation.
T: Was a bit wary going in, but was pleasantly surprised. Pretty tasty beer, and a creative idea to use olive juice...not that I would advocate more beers with it. Worth trying if you come down to the pub.

On tap at the Rehoboth beach alehouse
A-hazy dark yellow with a stable cream head
S-cedar, lemon, spice. interesting scent. musty smelling.
T-comes in with a faint but smooth taste of lemongrass and grains. has a slight musty funk to it. the end is matching with a slight bitterness, that is welcomed. very crisp, pretty boring.
M-creamy medium carbonation with a dry finish
O-very boring beer. nothing extreme about it. interesting in some ways, but very forgetful. glad i got to try it, it did go down very easily, but i won't get it again.

Sample was poured out by Sam himself at the EBF 2012. The brew poured out as a nice clear golden color with a fizzy looking white head on top. The smell of the beer was a mixture of grains with hints of the olive on the nose, smelled interesting. The taste of the beer has a decent flavor, it was along the lines of a golden ale with some hints of olive in there. The flavors were subtle, it wasn't something that was overkill on the ingredients used to make it. The mouthfeel was smooth and light bodied. Overall it was an interesting brew, I felt that it was better than the Wrath of Pecant. I would like to try this one again someday.
