look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Dark, muddy amber with a bit of haze, and a fizzy white film for a head. Not the most attractive beer, but since it's a specialty ale, I have a more forgiving, "anything goes" artitude that keeps my expectations for this one positive.

Smell: Just a little lighter on the nose than I expected. The "pumpkin" comes in the form of holiday spices--cinnamon, cloves, but most of all, nutmeg. Some spicy and floral hop aromas make the bouquet less inviting, in that they replace some of the sweetness with more of a scented candle effect.

Taste: Rich, Munich-like malt and earthy hops battle it out against holiday spices and a paltry amount of fruity esters. As a result, this unbalanced beer seems both too bitter, and too spicy. Maybe some more sweet specialty malts, less bittering hops, or even a paler base malt would have done the trick. There's something too dark about this ale for me. Not bad at all, just not fitting the bill.

Mouthfeel: Medium body and medium-light carbonation help brighten things up a bit. The finish is slightly dry due to the hop bitterness.

Overall: Reminds me more of a Christmas ale than a pumpkin ale. A nice enough effort, but one that gives a darker, more woodsy impression than the toasted pumpkin bread I was hoping for.
